MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama football head coach Steve Campbell, offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield, defensive coordinator Greg Stewart, along with running back Carlos Davis, defensive lineman Maurice Strong Jr. and safety Keith Gallmon met with the media Monday to recap the 30-20 win over Texas State and preview Saturday's game against ULM.
Head coach Steve Campbell
- On the play of the two quarterbacks on Saturday and how they handled things:
"Both of them did some good things, made the right decisions and were able to get the ball to the right people. I thought Desmond [Trotter] started the game off hot and took us down for two big drives where we scored 10 points. Right before the half, we brought Chance [Lovertich] in, who hadn't played to that point, and he was able to get us a touchdown right before the half. Both made a lot of big plays, but in that last drive of the first half with Chance, I felt he made some good decisions of when to throw it and when to pull it down and run it. I loved the way Desmond finished out the game. You have to have confidence in a guy when you're trying to run the clock out. You can either run the ball and possibly punt it back to the other team, or you can put the ball in your quarterback's hands and give him a chance to make a play. He did that in that late fourth-quarter drive. It took both of the quarterbacks to win the game. We didn't have any turnovers and that's a tribute to the play of our quarterbacks."
- On placekicker Diego Guajardo going 3-for-3 on his kicks and the national recognition that he's getting this week:
"Diego had a big-time game. He drilled some big field goals, none bigger than the last one. There was a decision of whether to try and go for the first down or get the points and drive it home. We have all the confidence in the world in Diego. I'd watched him practice throughout the summer and you know what kind of work ethic he's got, along with the snapper Jake Harwell and the holder Eli Gainey. That combination has put in a lot of time and effort, and I felt very good about Diego making the kick. He didn't blink and drilled it right down the middle. He also did some things that don't show up on the stat sheet, like the sky kick toward the end of the game that pinned Texas State inside the 25 and the squib kick at the end of the first half after we scored. He's definitely deserving of the attention that he's getting nationally."
- On how Riley Cole has done back at the inside linebacker position:
"Riley's a great athlete and a super competitor. You can't say enough about him because he fits what you want as an inside linebacker. He's continuing to get better each day having moved back to his natural position. That showed this past week with his 15 tackles along with a couple of tackles for loss. He did a really good job against Texas State. He's made a big jump from the first couple of weeks to now and I think you'll continue to see him to get better because of the fact that he's such a great football player."
- On ULM running back Josh Johnson:
"ULM has an outstanding running back in Josh Johnson that ran for 1,000 yards a year ago. He's one of the top running backs in the league. Our linebackers need to play well this week.
- On the possibility that the Warhawks will sneak up on South this weekend as they come in winless:
"Monroe won't sneak up on anybody because we know how dangerous they are. They are a very well-coached football team. Coach [Matt] Viator and his staff have always done a good job with their teams. Two weeks ago, the last play of their game against Georgia Southern had to be reviewed to see whether or not they were going to win. They are a very dangerous, capable football team. They've got a lot of great athletes and are well coached on defense by Scott Stoker. I've known him for a lot of years and he does a tremendous job. He's been at many different levels and has coached a number of great defenses. Viator has won a bunch of games on the offensive side of the ball. As I mentioned earlier, they have one of the best running backs in the league and they have some dangerous receivers. We need to have a great week of preparation."
- On what practice needs to be like this week in order to keep momentum:
"When we've practiced well this season, we've played well. That's been the way every year, but this year it's seemed to make even more of a difference probably because of the missed spring [practice] time. Practices were extremely physical before the Southern Miss game and before Tulane. For one reason or another, we were able to get back and practice the way we needed to this past week leading up to Texas State. We do a lot of our third-down work on Tuesday and Wednesday against our defense, and I think that it's paid off for both of us. When we're able to work against each other, it's helped simulate the speed that you're going to see on Saturday. We just need to keep pushing each other and sharpening our horns.
"ULM's defense is a pressure-type defense. They're going to play man-to-man and bring pressure off the edges. They have a really good blitz package that is hard to simulate in walk through. They can run the ball and their quarterback can sling it, in addition to the speed they have on the outside. The more that we are able to work against each other, the better off we're going to be."
Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield
- On working underneath routes against Texas State:
"I don't know that we worked the underneath really well, but we did a better job of it. They [Texas State] did play really soft back there, and I think that is why we were able to run the ball on them some as well. We had some good seams there, but I thought the guys did a nice job of getting the ball to the right guy underneath. We missed a couple that I think we will be able to get better at after watching the film, but it was a really nice job there."
- On playing two quarterbacks:
"What we're trying to do is if you make it you get to keep playing. You don't want to take a guy out just because he makes a mistake; we all make mistakes, I made a bunch on Saturday. But try to give them a couple of drives, if we stall on a couple of drives then let's take a peek at the next guy. Desmond (Trotter) was playing well, but there was a good situation where we wanted to get Chance [Lovertich] in the first half. I thought he responded well. Coming out the second half, I thought Chance did a really nice job. They have been really good. They're all really competitive people who want to play; they know they can get it done, but they also understand the situation. They're trying to be real supportive of each other, and they've been great in the meeting rooms and at practice."
- On the offense:
"Any time you start making plays and things are going good for you, it's easy to get on a roll. We always talk about adverse situations because they come all the time, you have to be overcome those situations but also have to handle the success. I thought they came (to practice) yesterday with the attitude of finding out and correcting what we did wrong, and get ready to play this week. I'm excited and I think we're starting off on the right track this week."
- On ULM's defense:
"They're defensive coordinator has been around a lot, and he is an aggressive guy. I am anticipating it being a little different look, but that could change. They are more of a man coverage team that will bring a little more pressure on you. He might change a little bit, but I doubt it; most of the time we are all creatures of our own habits. I am expecting a lot of man coverage and pressure this week."
Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart
- On Riley Cole:
"Every time he goes out and practices, he gets better. He played like we all expected him to play [on Saturday]. He needs to do that more often. He needs to take over games because he's a really good player and I think he did a nice job of that Saturday. He missed a tackle early, but then he got into the zone or blinking as we call it."
- On ULM:
"Josh Johnson is a good back. He is from Alabama, and a good player. They have fallen behind [in a few games] and have not really had a chance to use him, but watching the Georgia Southern game, early in the first half he got loose a few times. I think what they want to do is give it to Johnson, I would because he is a great player. He is one of the better backs we will see [this season]. They have a few older guys up front that have been around and a quarterback [Colby Suits] that when he gets hot he is good. He has thrown a few interceptions but I have seen him throw some really good balls. They have a good crew of receivers and are a really good football team."
Running back Carlos Davis
- On getting banged up at the end of the game this past weekend:
"I'm feeling pretty good, but I am working hard for a speedy recovery. On the field, it was important to keep the clock going, to keep control of the ball, and to keep gaining yards."
- On moving forward:
"My mindset going into this weekend's game is to work towards that next win and to not take ULM lightly. If we want to see success this weekend, we have to keep our energy and bring our game to them. We have to be a physical team and keep going hard."
Defensive lineman Maurice Strong Jr.
- On last weekend's win:
"We were able to make good plays because we kept a focused mindset. We worked hard in practice, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday, where we ran third-down pairings, and that's what you saw on Saturday. The win was huge for us as a team because we wanted it. We went into the game determined to get the win. It was a big confidence boost for the team. We worked hard, and we deserved the win, and that will push us to get the win against ULM."
- On moving forward:
"To keep the momentum going, we have to come with the same mindset and attitude as we did last weekend. We have to push through and not let up. Whenever we feel like we're letting up, we have to push a little harder. It's time to lockdown and maintain focus because we are number one on our side and have to keep that reputation up."
Safety Keith Gallmon
- On last weekend's win:
"Last week's win was big for our team. It means a lot to be one of the first to win in the new stadium, and I will always remember it. It was big for the community, and it was a great way to start conference play. We came together as a team, and now we are moving on to ULM. We know they are a good physical team and have good tight ends."
- On defense action:
"As a defense, we have been focusing on third-down plays. We have been communicating with each other and keeping up the energy that we need for this weekend to do what we need to do."
- On moving forward:
"We gained a lot of confidence Saturday. We were able to limit their [Texas State's] offense, and our defense was able to apply a lot of pressure on their quarterback. That's the team we want to continue to be, and I believe we can achieve that."
