IRVING, Texas – University of South Alabama senior Brian Ankerson is on the Rimington Trophy Watch List, it was announced on Wednesday.
In addition to being named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy®, Ankerson has also been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® and the Wuerffel Trophy this year.
Ankerson recorded both the highest overall and assignment marks on the Jaguar offensive line the opening month of the season while posting nine knockdown blocks, which is tied for the second-highest total on the team. That included receiving grades of 83 percent overall and 88 on assignments to go along with five pancake blocks in South's first-ever game at the new Hancock Whitney Stadium against Tulane on Sept. 12.
He has also finished with the squad's best overall and assignment grades each of the last two seasons, including grading out at 82 percent overall and 89 percent on assignments during the 2019 campaign. Ankerson was credited with a career-best 52 knockdowns last fall, posting 92 total since taking over as the Jags' starting center at the beginning of 2018.
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football. Dave Rimington, the award's namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy's only two-time winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
Ankerson and the Jaguars will return to action at 11 a.m. (CDT) Saturday when they play host to Texas State in the program's annual Homecoming game.
