Date: 8/4
Time: 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells
Offensive Player of the Day: Cephus Johnson, So., QB, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Johnson: "There was still a lot to add since it was day three of installation, but I thought Cephus had a really good day. He was kind of good the first two days, but he stood out today; he made some good throws and really good decisions."
Defensive Player of the Day: Sean Brown, Sr., DL, Pleasant Grove, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Brown: "Today was a day we had to push with it being the first day in pads and Sean showed up. There was a lot of banging out there, I thought Sean was consistent throughout the day and I noticed him in all the team periods."
Play of the Day: Facing a second-and-long after a coverage sack on the fourth play of the opening series of the final team period, Johnson made an excellent read on the run-pass-option pulling the ball and hitting tight end Zac Crosby over the middle for a 15-plus yard gain.
Team period highlights: There were two different 10-minute team periods, with the first working on the RPO and the second seeing the offensive and defensive units working against each other.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On practicing in pads for the first time: "It was good to have the pads back on. The guys have been working hard all summer. We've had two really good days in helmets and t-shirts, but today was closer to real football. I liked a lot of what I saw. There were definitely some areas where we have to get better at. There are some things you can't work on in just helmets, such as pad level and things of that nature. I like the retention the guys had; I thought we executed some things better today that we didn't yesterday in shorts. I feel we're getting better as a football team. I like where we're at after three days.""
-On the importance of conditioning: "The conditioning of our players is something we have to be smart with. We need to get out in the sun and have as much of that element as we possibly can, while also taking care of the guys and making sure that they can recover. It's hot and humid down here. Our players need to do a great job of hydrating and pushing ourselves to get better, while staying on the field so that we can get better every day."
-On the offense's execution: "This summer was good for us. Our quarterbacks and receivers got out there and threw a lot together. We have four of our five (starting) offensive lineman back that played 12 games last year, so that helps. This time a year ago, we were breaking in new quarterbacks, new coaches, new offensive line, new everywhere. This year, we're a year further into things. For the first day in pads, there were some things that I was pleased with in our execution. We have a long way to go and a lot of stuff to clean up. It's not real football yet (because) we haven't tackled yet, but I like the direction we're headed. We just have to keep grinding and get a little bit better every day."
Up next: South Alabama will return to the practice field Monday for its first morning session of fall camp. The two-hour session is scheduled to be held 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Football Practice Facility.
