NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournaments commence this week and the University of South Alabama women's and men's teams will open at home, Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
USA's women, the No. 7 seed, start things off Monday night at 7 p.m. against No. 10 seed Louisiana. The men, the No. 8 seed, will take on No. 9 Arkansas State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The women finished the regular season with its second-consecutive 20 win season at 20-9 overall and 9-9 in the Sun Belt.
South Alabama took their only meeting of the season with Louisiana, besting them 83-60 on Jan. 24 at home.
Antoinette Lewis led the Jaguars with a 20-point performance against the Ragin' Cajuns and shot 8-of-14 from the floor.
Shaforia Kines went 5-for-5 from the three-point line in that contest to finish with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Freshman guard
Damaya Telemaque joined them in double figures with 13 points and added five assists in the win.
Monday's winner will take on No. 6 seed Texas State at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La., on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
USA's men enter the tournament at 15-16 overall and 8-10 in the league. The 15 wins represent the most by the program since 2012-13.
South Alabama and Arkansas State split two regular-season meetings, with each school winning on its home court. The Red Wolves held on 66-65 on Jan. 10 in Jonesboro despite 24 points from senior
Rodrick Sikes, and the Jaguars took the return matchup on Feb. 7 behind 24 points from junior
Herb McGee and 20 points from junior
Josh Ajayi.
The winner will move on to face No. 5 seed Louisiana Thursday at 5 p.m. at Lakefront Arena.
