South Alabama Cruises Past UTSA, 82–58

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – South Alabama men's basketball dominated UTSA from start to finish on Sunday afternoon, building an early lead and never letting up as the Jaguars rolled past the Roadrunners, 82–58, at the Convocation Center. The win lifts South Alabama to 7–1 on the season, while the Roadrunners drop to 4–3.

KEY STATS

Peyton Law finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds, while Jayden Cooper added 11 points.

  • South Alabama pulled down its most rebounds (53) against a Division I opponent since November 2013 in a matchup against Detroit Mercy.

  • The Jags won the rebounding battle 53–39 and outscored UTSA 19–11 off the bench.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Jaguars wasted no time setting the tone, answering UTSA's opening basket with a three-pointer from Olsen before Harris jump-started the break with a steal and coast-to-coast finish to give South its first surge.
  • After UTSA briefly pulled within one early in the half, South Alabama responded with a 10–2 run, featuring a second-chance layup from Randy Brady and back-to-back stops that turned into transition buckets.
  • Midway through the first half, the Jags created separation when Brian Hawthorne knocked down a jumper, then followed it with a steal that turned into a Harris fast-break finish. Moments later, Law threw down a dunk off an assist from Harris to push the cushion to double digits.
  • South Alabama closed the opening period with momentum, capped by an Olsen triple in the final 30 seconds to extend the lead to 44–31 at the break.
  • The Jaguars opened the second half with intensity, as Harris scored on consecutive possessions in the paint before dishing to Olsen for another three-pointer, stretching the lead to 20 less than three minutes into the half.
  • With 10:31 remaining, Cooper buried a second-chance three-pointer to give South Alabama its largest lead of the night at 29.
  • The Jaguars emptied the bench down the stretch and cruised to the 24-point road victory, closing the game on a steady defensive stand that limited UTSA to 27 second-half points.

Quotes

Head Coach Richie Riley

On the defensive effort

"It was all about our defense today — and it always is. That's how we win and what we hang our hat on. Defense is the culture of our team and our identity. I also thought we did some really good things offensively. We did a great job attacking and getting consistent paint touches. Forty points in the paint is a great number, and 16 assists are even better. We got really good contributions from a lot of people, and that's always encouraging when you win. Our guys did a great job executing and playing with a ton of force and passion."
