South Alabama Travels to Face UTSA Sunday Afternoon

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama men's basketball will look to bounce back from its first setback of the season as the Jaguars travel to San Antonio to face the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. CT. on ESPN+.

Last Time Out

  • After trailing by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Jaguars mounted a ferocious rally to pull even late, but UAB closed strong to secure an 80–72 decision Friday night at Bartow Arena.
  • Senior guard Chaze Harris delivered a monster performance, finishing with a season-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting, adding four rebounds and four assists. Adam Olsen joined him in double figures with 18 points, connecting on four three-pointers with two rebounds.
  • UAB won the rebounding battle 42–29, including 15 offensive boards. The Jags scored 34 points in the paint but struggled at the free-throw line, finishing 16-of-27 (59.3%), including 6-of-13 in the opening half.
  • The Blazers closed the first half on an 11–3 run to take a 36–26 lead at the break. After UAB pushed the margin back into double digits, South answered with a 14–6 surge late, capped by a Brian Hawthorne and-one and a Hawthorne assist to Peyton Law that tied the game at 67–67 with 2:56 remaining. UAB answered with a decisive 13–5 run and three late triples to seal the result.

Scouting the Roadrunners

  • UTSA split games at the Jacksonville Classic earlier this week, falling to Abilene Christian before rebounding with a comeback win over Georgia Southern to return home above .500.
  • Lima, Ohio, graduate student Jamir Simpson leads the Roadrunners at 18.9 points per game, ranking third in the American Conference and 72nd nationally. Junior forward Macaleab Rich added momentum in the win over Georgia Southern with 11 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. He averages 9.2 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting 63.3 percent from the floor.
  • UTSA ranks second in the conference with 29.9 bench points per game and averages 77.1 points on 43 percent shooting. The Roadrunners also rank third in the league in fast-break scoring (14.1 per game), second in rebounding (42.9 rpg), and 20th nationally in opponent field goal percentage (37.0%).

Notes You Need to Know

• The Jaguars stormed back from a 16-point deficit to defeat Jacksonville State earlier in the week, opening the year 6–0 for the best start in program history. It also marked the best start of Richie Riley's head coaching career.

• Harris has scored in double figures in six of seven games this season, averaging 16.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. He ranks top 10 in the Sun Belt in points, assists, and assist-to-turnover ratio.

• The Jaguars rely heavily on their starting five of Cooper, Harris, Olsen, Law, and Brady, who account for 79% of the team's total scoring this season (350 of 460 points).

• Riley and UTSA head coach Austin Claunch previously served together on the coaching staff at Clemson from 2014–16 and Nicholls from 2017-18.

• South Alabama remains elite defensively, ranking second in the Sun Belt in scoring defense (64.1 ppg allowed) and top three in opponent field goal percentage (38.5%). Opponents have taken 63.2% of their attempts from three-point range.

• The Jaguars rank second nationally in fouls per game (12.4) and 35th in turnovers per game (9.4), while sitting second in the Sun Belt in both turnover margin (+4.6) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.35).

• The Jags have dominated the paint, outscoring opponents 364–196 inside, and rank top three in the Sun Belt in rebounding margin (+7.4) and fewest opponent rebounds allowed (32.4).

• Law is averaging 14.3 points and 6.5 rebounds while ranking top 15 nationally in field goals made (39) and 22nd in field goal percentage (71.1%).

• South Alabama currently sits second in the Sun Belt in team field goal percentage (48.2%) and has shot 50 percent or better in three of its first five games — a first in the Riley era.
