JAG FOOTBALL PREVIEWS TEXAS STATE

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama football head coach Steve Campbell, offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield, defensive coordinator Greg Stewart, along with offensive lineman Jacob Shoemaker and safety Sterrling Fisher with the media Monday to preview Saturday's game at Texas State.

Below are some highlights:

Head Coach Steve Campbell
- On the bye week:
"I thought the guys practiced really hard last week. We had an open week that came at a good time for us. We were able to prepare for a lot of things that we definitely need to work on, and the guys really had a spirited week of good competition. We got a lot of third down and red zone work, and worked on two-minute drill. We really had a good week, and it came at a good time for us."

- On who is the starting quarterback:
"We'll see, both did a lot of good things this past week in practice. Cephus (Johnson) has been playing on a bad wheel since halftime of the Georgia Southern game. He came back and played the second half of that game and did some good things, but really since that time his mobility has been limited. Desmond (Trotter) came in and definitely gave us a little bit of a lift and some juice and energy (against App State). We quite obviously need to move the football better. We've made some changes at other positons, some guys are getting more playing time, and the quarterback positon is definitely off limits. Nobody studies more or wants to well more than Cephus, but he is a little limited right now with his mobility. We'll keep practicing and put the guy in there who gives us the best chance to be successful."

Offensive Coordinator Kenny Edenfield
- On Texas State:
"We had a good week (of practice) last week; guys were spirited and we got a couple of days of really good fundamental work in. We got to take a look at Texas State and started working on them. We've been working hard on getting better on third down. We competed against the defense all last week, and I thought the guys really enjoyed that. We're just trying to get a good (game) plan together so we have an opportunity to be successful on Saturday."

- On matchups with Texas State:
"What you try to do every week is look for where you can get some advantages – where we can get numbers in the run or pass game. They (Texas State) play a little different style of three-man front defense, kind of a hybrid like Iowa State; they keep a guy deep, call him a nickel, and then get him down in the box some against some big sets. They are a little bit different, so it was good to have a couple of extra days, but really for us it is just about getting better. I thought last week our guys were really spirited, and we went against each other a bunch which I think helped both side on just competing."

- On the quarterback position:
"The good thing was we were able to get some of that work this week. Tanner (McGee) can play in up to four games with the new redshirt rule, and we'll probably try to get him in some just to see how he does. He has done well. I think Desmond (Trotter) has done a really nice job; you saw at the end of the (App State) game that he was very competitive. This week has also allowed Cephus (Johnson) a little more time to get comfortable with his ankle."

Defensive Coordinator Greg Stewart
- On Texas State:
"They don't do a lot offensively, but they do what they do over and over again. They have three or four plays they run throughout the game, and they are really good at running certain plays. What they want you to do is to misfit and not be in a gap or where you're supposed to be, and they take advantage of you there. So we have to do a good job of being assignment sound. They don't do a lot, but what they do, they do it well. Their screen game is really good, and it's probably been one of their better plays this fall. We have to do a good job with it and keep working."

- On the bye week:
"It was good. The team is working hard with a lot of spirit. They still have a good attitude, and they have been really fun to coach. "

Offensive Lineman Jacob Shoemaker
- Opening thoughts:
"We had an extended break and had a few more days to get better and practice our drills. We studied and watched a lot of film on Texas State to get ready for them."

- On Texas State:
"We have to play strong, fast and smart. Their (Texas State) defensive line is pretty tough, but we've seen people like them throughout the year. I believe we can make it happen."

- On the bye week:
"It's annoying. When you are used to playing game after game and then have a break, you get anxious."

Linebacker Sterrling Fisher
- Opening thoughts:
"With this extra break, we've been able to practice hard and learn more about Texas State. It has really been a good time for us to prepare for them."

- On Texas State:
"They are a good team that likes to run a lot of screens; they have pretty big running backs. We just have to play hard, fast and strong and hopefully we can come out with the win."

- On the bye week:
"It feels weird because you always play on Saturday, but it is also a good opportunity to prepare for the opponent. It's a good and bad thing."
