THREE FORMER JAGS COMPETING IN MLB

MOBILE, Ala. – Three former University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes have competed in Major League Baseball this season, with two currently playing at the MLB level.

David Freese is batting .261 with five doubles, five home runs, 23 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 61 games played with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is hitting .271 with two home runs, 13 RBIs and six runs scored in his last 30 games. Freese is batting .286 in 30 road games this season, and has hit all five of his home runs on the road. The Pirates are 12 ½ games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division, and host the Washington Nationals at 6:05 p.m. (CT) Monday to kick off a three-game series.

Jordan Patterson was called up to the Colorado Rockies from the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes on Sat., July 7. Patterson has not appeared in an MLB game since 2016. In 73 games at Albuquerque this season, Patterson is batting .265 with 14 doubles, one triple, 19 home runs, 52 RBIs, 49 runs scored and five stolen bases. He became the Isotopes' career leader in hit by pitches and home runs earlier this season. The Rockies have played two games since Patterson was promoted, but he did not appear in either game. Colorado will return to action Tuesday at 7:40 p.m. (CT) when it hosts the Arizona Diamondbacks in the series opener of a three-game set in Denver.

Right-handed pitcher Ben Taylor made six relief appearances for the Cleveland Indians from May 2-30. Taylor allowed four runs on six hits in six innings pitched, and recorded eight strikeouts against one walk in that span. He did not allow a run in his first two appearances of the year with the Indians, who selected Taylor off of waivers from the Boston Red Sox on Feb. 25. Taylor is also 5-1 with seven saves in 28 relief appearances with the Columbus Clippers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Indians.
