MOBILE, Ala. – Eight University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes are currently competing in summer ball across the country.
Reid Powers has recorded one double, one home run, eight RBIs, seven runs scored and one stolen base in 15 games played with the Alexandria Aces of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League.
Andrew Bates is batting .244 with six doubles, two triples, two home runs, 16 RBIs, 17 runs scored and four stolen bases in 21 games played with the Western Nebraska Pioneers of the Expedition League. Bates hit safely in his first eight games with the Pioneers, and has recorded five multiple-hit and multi-RBI games this season.
Right-handed pitcher
Hunter Phillips is 2-0 with four saves in 11 relief appearances with the Savannah Bananas of the Coastal Plain League. Phillips has struck out 16 batters against four walks, and has not allowed an earned run in 12 1/3 innings pitched.
Colton Thomas is batting .240 with four doubles, one triple, one home run, 11 RBIs, 10 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 22 games played with the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League. Thomas has recorded four multiple-hit and two multi-RBI games this season.
Eddie Paparella, a teammate of Thomas' with the Grizzlies in the Coastal Plain League, has recorded six hits, driven in two runs and scored three times in 13 games played.Â
Kaleb DeLaTorre was named a MINK League South Division All-Star at second base as a member of the Joplin Outlaws. He is batting .320 with five doubles, two home runs, 17 RBIs, 13 runs scored and one stolen base in 22 games played. DeLaTorre has recorded six multiple-hit and three multi-RBI games this summer, and tallied four hits and five RBIs in a June 10 game against the Chillicothe Mudcats.
Cyrus Grimes is batting .418 with five doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 21 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 27 games played with the Wellsville Nitros of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Grimes hit safely in six of his first seven games this summer, and has recorded 11 multiple-hit and five multi-RBI contests. He was recently named an NYCBL All-Star as an outfielder. The game will be held on Mon., July 9, in Syracuse, N.Y.
Nick Lewis has appeared in one game and drew a walk in his lone plate appearance for the LaCrosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. Â
