EIGHT JAGS WINDING DOWN SUMMER LEAGUE BASEBALL

MOBILE, Ala. – Five University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes are currently competing in summer ball across the country, while three have wrapped up their respective summer schedules.

Andrew Bates is batting .311 with 10 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 29 RBIs, 27 runs scored and six stolen bases in 28 games played with the Western Nebraska Pioneers of the Expedition League. Bates has hit safely in seven of his last 10 games, and recorded multiple hits in each of those seven contests including four hits and seven RBIs on July 23 against Casper.

Colton Thomas is batting .306 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs, 21 RBIs, 18 runs scored and 13 stolen bases while posting a .419 on-base percentage in 35 games played with the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League. Thomas has hit .317 with three doubles, one triple, two home runs, 13 RBIs and 13 runs scored in 18 road games for the Grizzlies this summer.

Eddie Paparella, a teammate of Thomas' with the Grizzlies, has recorded six hits, two RBIs, three runs scored and one stolen base in 13 games played with Gastonia.

Right-handed pitcher Hunter Phillips is 3-0 with six saves in 16 relief appearances for the Savannah Bananas in the Coastal Plain League. Phillips has posted a 1.47 ERA with 20 strikeouts against seven walks in 18 1/3 innings pitched. He is averaging 9.82 strikeouts per nine innings, and has allowed just one unearned run in his last nine appearances which spans 9 1/3 innings.

Nick Lewis is batting .280 with one home run, nine RBIs, eight runs scored and three stolen bases in 17 games played with the LaCrosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. 

Reid Powers batted .268 with four doubles, one triple, one home run, 13 RBIs, 14 runs scored and two stolen bases in 26 games played with the Alexandria Aces of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. Powers hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games, and drove in at least one run in five of those contests. 

Kaleb DeLaTorre batted .287 with 11 doubles, four home runs, 34 RBIs, 28 runs scored and three stolen bases in 40 games played for the Joplin Outlaws of the MINK League. DeLaTorre earned MINK League South Division All-Star honors earlier in the summer at second base.

Cyrus Grimes batted .388 with nine doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 23 RBIs, 33 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 34 games played with the Wellsville Nitros of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Grimes was named an NYCBL All-Star as an outfielder earlier this summer.
