NORTHBROOK, Ill. – University of South Alabama rising senior Sean Grayer is one of 169 nominees across the country for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, it was announced Tuesday by Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA and one honorary head coach. To be in consideration by Allstate and the AFCA for a nomination, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing. The final roster of 22 award recipients and honorary head coach will be unveiled in September.
A special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will review submissions from sports information directors across the nation to select the 2018 Good Works Team®.
Grayer, who hails from Green Cove Springs, Fla., has volunteered for the Wilmer Hall Children's Home pancake breakfast fundraiser each of his first three years with the program, and has twice served as a volunteer at a spring Special Olympics meet held at local high schools and at South's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Dodge Ball Tournament. He has also contributed to the Jaguar football team's Thanksgiving dinner donation and has been a member of Campus Outreach since his freshman season.
On the field, Grayer is coming off a junior campaign that saw him post a career-best 20 stops, an interception and a blocked kick. He was credited with a career-high-tying three tackles — with one for a loss of four yards — in the Jags' victory at Troy in the annual "Battle For The Belt," also earning the coaches' defensive line award following a Senior Day defeat of Arkansas State after he finished the game with two tackles including a sack and his first career interception.
In his first three years at the collegiate level, Grayer has made 43 stops with four of those behind the line of scrimmage including 1½ sacks.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season.
