AUSTIN, Texas – University of South Alabama offensive lineman Rowan Godwin earned second-team recognition on the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I football teams released by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Monday.
He is just the second Jaguar since the program's inception in 2009 to be named an Academic All-American by the organization; former center Trey Clark was a second-team honoree in 2012.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition individuals must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or better, be a starter or important reserve, and must have sophomore status both academically and athletically.
A junior from Dothan, Ala., Godwin saw action in all 12 contests this fall — starting each of the first six outings — and recorded an 85 percent assignment grade and 24 knockdown blocks. He earned an overall grade of 83 percent and a 97 percent assignment mark, both season-high figures, in South's win over Alabama State in October, and he was credited with assignment grades above 90 percent both at Memphis and following the Jags' defeat of Coastal Carolina in the finale last month. Godwin recorded multiple pancake blocks on seven occasions in 2018 as well, with a high of four in the opener against Louisiana Tech.
In the classroom, Godwin is carrying a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average as a criminal justice major with a minor in business management. A member of the Tau Sigma and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies who has also been presented the Timothy O'Shea Criminal Justice Award, Godwin has been named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List each of the last two years and has been on the President's List every semester since arriving on campus in the fall of 2016.
