JAG BASEBALL WINDING DOWN FALL PRACTICE



MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will wrap up its final week of fall practice this weekend with a pair of intrasquad games.

The Jaguars are scheduled to play the first of two games on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Stanky Field. The final intrasquad contest is scheduled for Sat., Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m. at Stanky Field. 

South Alabama capped last week with a doubleheader on Sat., Nov. 3, against Spring Hill College at Stanky Field. The Jags defeated the Badgers 14-2 and 18-2, respectively, in the twinbill.  

Ethan Wilson went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Jaguars at the plate. Santiago Montiel finished 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored, and Michael Sandle added a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Eight different Jaguar hitters drove in at least one run in the game.

Right-hander Zach Greene tossed two scoreless innings, and allowed one hit while striking out two to earn the win. Right-hander Joel Cheatwood struck out three and allowed one hit in 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings. 

In game two of the doubleheader, South Alabama scored 18 runs on 12 hits. Andrew Bates and Justin Dunnam each homered in the game. Dunnam drove in four runs, while Kaleb DeLaTorre and Eddie Paparella drove in two runs apiece.

Right-hander Drake Nightengale allowed one unearned run on one hit with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks in three innings pitched to earn the win. Right-hander Jase Dalton tossed two perfect innings with one strikeout.

South Alabama held an intrasquad game on Mon., Nov. 5, at Stanky Field following its doubleheader with Spring Hill College, and will is scheduled to hold just two more before closing fall practice.

Through 10 intrasquad games, Wells Davis lead the team in batting average (.348), slugging percentage (.739) and on-base percentage (.484), and is tied with Wilson for the team lead in home runs (2). DeLaTorre leads the team in hits (9), while Felix Aberouette leads in RBIs (9) and Bennett Shell leads in stolen bases (4).

Davis also leads the team in multiple-hit games with three, while Colton Thomas, Nick Lewis, Aberouette, Cyrus Grimes, DeLaTorre and Wilson have two each. Wilson and Davis lead the team with two multi-RBI games apiece, and Michael Sandle has reached base safely in all 10 contests.

Right-hander Tyler Perez leads the team in ERA (1.80), while right-hander Zach Harlan leads in strikeouts (12). Hunter Phillips has not allowed a run in three appearances, and has struck out five against one walk in four innings pitched.
