MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team capped its third week of fall practice last weekend.
Thus far, the Jaguars have played nine intrasquad games and two games against Tulane at Stanky Field. South Alabama will host Spring Hill College Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Stanky Field.
USA fell to Tulane 8-5 and 7-2, respectively, in last weekend's doubleheader. Nick Lewis and Ethan Wilson led the team with two hits apiece in the two games against the Green Wave. Lewis finished the day 2-for-6 with one run scored and one stolen base, while Wilson went 2-for-6 with a double and one run scored. Eddie Paparella led the team with two RBIs in two games, while Colton Thomas, Santi Montiel, Bennett Shell and Justin Dunnam drove in one run apiece.
Right-hander Nick DeSantis struck out a team-high four batters and allowed just one hit in two innings of work. Right-hander Zach Greene, who started game one, tossed two perfect innings and struck out three batters. Zach Young, Jase Dalton, Joel Cheatwood, Tyler Perez and Noah Michael each also recorded scoreless appearances against Tulane.
In nine intrasquad contests, Michael Sandle and Carter Perkins lead the team in batting average (.333), while Wilson holds the team lead in home runs (2), and shares the team lead in RBIs (6) with Felix Aberouette. Shell holds the team lead in stolen bases with four, while Kaleb DeLaTorre leads the team in hits (9).
Sandle has reached base in nine straight intrasquad games, and has hit safely in four straight. DeLaTorre, Wells Davis, Wilson and Aberouette share the team lead with two multiple-hit games apiece.
Right-hander Zach Harlan owns the team's lowest ERA (1.80) in intrasquad games. In four appearances with one start, Harlan has struck out 10 batters in 10 innings pitched. Hunter Phillips has not allowed a run in three appearances, which spans four innings, and has recorded four strikeouts with one walk. Michael has posted a 1.12 ERA with a pair of strikeouts without issuing a walk in eight innings pitched, while Perez has a 1.29 ERA with two strikeouts against one walk in seven innings pitched.Â
Saturday's doubleheader with Spring Hill College will serve as the final tune-up before the Jaguars begin play in the Red-Blue Series, which is set to begin with game one on Tue., Nov. 6, at 3:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.Â
