2019 Schedule
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will host 30 games at Stanky Field this season as part of the 2019 schedule that was released Thursday by head coach Mark Calvi.
South Alabama will open the season on the road with a three-game series at Clemson (Feb. 15-17) before returning to Stanky Field to host Alabama State (Feb. 19) in the 2019 home opener. USA will face New Orleans (Feb. 20) in its first midweek road contest, followed by a three-game series with Tennessee Tech (Feb. 22-24) at Stanky Field.
"The last couple of years, we have been on the road three out of the first four weeks," Calvi said. "But this year three of our first four weekends are at home since we open up with Clemson on the road. We want to play a great home schedule against exciting teams for our fans to enjoy, and I think we've done that. Clemson is a top-10 team, Tennessee Tech was in a Super Regional last year, LSU is traditionally a top-five program each year and a much improved Alabama.Â
"Our schedule is not for the faint of heart, but I wouldn't have it any other way. We try to put together the best schedule that we can. We'll play anybody anywhere, because it's all about getting into the postseason; we're going to take every measure we can to be prepared for it if we are fortunate enough to get into the postseason."
The Jaguars will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to square off with LSU (Feb. 26) before hosting Alabama (March 1-3) in a three-game set at Stanky Field that kicks off a 12-game home stand that will also feature contests against Nicholls State (March 6), a three-game series with Sacred Heart (March 8-10), a midweek matchup against Auburn (March 12), a three-game series with Texas State (March 15-17) to open Sun Belt Conference play and a midweek contest with New Orleans (March 19) to close the home stand.
USA will take on Arkansas State (March 22-24) in Jonesboro, Ark., in its first road Sun Belt series, followed by a midweek matchup with Southeastern Louisiana (March 26) at Stanky Field. The Jags then travel to UT Arlington (March 29-31) for a three-game conference series before heading to Southern Miss (April 2) for a midweek contest with the Golden Eagles.Â
South Alabama will host Coastal Carolina (April 5-7) in a three-game conference set at Stanky Field, followed by a midweek matchup at Mississippi State (April 10) and a three-game Sun Belt series at Louisiana (April 12-14). USA will host Southern Miss (April 16) prior to a three-game conference series with Georgia State (April 18-20) at Stanky Field.
A midweek contest at Alabama State (April 23) will kick off a four-game road swing that will also feature a three-game series at Georgia Southern (April 26-28). The Jags host Little Rock (May 3-5) in a three-game conference set before embarking on a five-game road swing that will feature a midweek contest at Southeastern Louisiana (May 7), a three-game series at Appalachian State (May 10-12) and midweek matchup at Tulane (May 14). South Alabama will close the regular season with a three-game Sun Belt series with Troy (May 16-18) at Stanky Field.
The 2019 Sun Belt Tournament will be held May 20-26 in Conway, S.C.
"We're trying to put together the best schedule we can with teams who are regional, super regional and College World Series-type teams because those are our postseason expectations," Calvi said. "First and foremost, our schedule is put together to get us ready for a rugged Sun Belt Conference schedule and the postseason. It's not geared to win 40 games like it used to be; if we happen to win 40 games on any schedule we have, then we're in the postseason anyway – that's how I look at it. But it's designed to get us ready to make a run at a conference championship and be ready for the postseason.
"We have three ACC and six SEC games with 30 home contests in there. Last year, our non-conference strength of schedule was ranked fourth in the country. We had our struggles last year; we were missing some guys, and due to the strength of our schedule we were still in a position to get in (to postseason) at the end. The whole concept behind my scheduling strategy is pretty obvious: Â play really good teams and play our fair share of good teams on the road. I want to put the guys in situations that will be advantageous for them if we are fortunate enough to get into the postseason, which is our goal every single year."
