All-Time Series
South Alabama holds a 61-45 all-time lead over UL-Lafayette in a series that dates back to 1975. The Ragin' Cajuns took two of three games from the Jaguars at Stanky Field last season. USA won the series opener 3-2, but ULL responded with a 5-4 win in 11 innings in game two to even the series and clinched the three-game set with a 6-3 win the finale. The Jags took two of three games from the Cajuns in 2015, which marked the last time the schools met in Lafayette. USA took the first two games 5-0 and 4-3 , while ULL won the finale 3-2.
Last Time Out
USA fell to No. 23 Southern Mississippi 4-2 Tuesday evening in Hattiesburg, Miss. Â The Golden Eagles broke a scoreless tie with a bases-loaded two-run single in the bottom of the third, and pushed its lead to 3-0 on a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. USA scored its only runs of the contest in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded, pinch-hit two-run double by Paul Russo. Left-hander Andy Arguelles (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out a career-high seven batters against three walks in 5 2/3 innings in the loss.
On No. 21 UL-Lafayette
The Ragin' Cajuns took two of three games from Troy last weekend in Troy, Ala., and split a pair of  midweek games with a 3-1 win at McNeese State Tuesday and 15-3 loss at Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday. The Cajun pitching staff leads the SBC in ERA (3.30), strikeouts (265) and opposing batting average (.200).  Left-hander Gunner Leger leads the league in ERA (1.23), ranks second in opposing batting average (.171) and third in strikeouts (45). Right-hander Wyatt Marks leads the conference in opposing batting average (.156), and ranks second in ERA (1.32). ULL ranks eighth in the SBC in batting average (.262), and 10th in runs scored (108), walks (79) and RBI (98).Â
Jag Notes
• South Alabama leads the Sun Belt Conference in fielding percentage (.980) entering the weekend. The Jags did not commit an error in Tuesday's loss at Southern Miss, which snapped a four-game streak of at least one error committed.
JAGS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
South Alabama ranks second nationally in walks (155), sixth in runs per game (8.6), seventh in runs scored (216) and eighth in on-base percentgae (.421). The Jaguars lead the Sun Belt Conference in all of those categories, in addition to slugging percentage (.453).Â
SWAGGERTY IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
Center fielder Travis Swaggerty leads the SBC and ranks sixth nationally in OBP (553). Swaggerty also leads the league in batting average (.410), stolen bases per game (0.55) and RBI per game (1.23), and ranks second in RBI (27), slugging percentage (.654) and stolen bases (12).Â
JAGS ON THE ROAD
USA is 4-7 and 2-1 in the SBC in road games this season. The Jags are batting .284 with 20 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 76 RBI and 82 runs scored in those 11 contests, led by Travis Swaggerty who is hitting .400 with four doubles, two home runs, 14 RBI, eight runs scored and four stolen bases with a .510 OBP in 10 road games in which he has played.Â
TWO OR FEWER TO WIN
USA is 6-1 when allowing two or fewer runs, but is 9-9 when surrendering three or more. The Jags have won four of their last five games in which they have allowed three or more runs, dating back to their March 18 win at Georgia Southern.Â
TWO-OUT RBI
Of USA's 192 team RBI, 80 have come with two outs. Travis Swaggerty leads the team with 13 two-out RBI this season.
LEADING AFTER SEVEN
USA is 13-0 when leading after seven innings this season, but is 0-7 when trailing and 1-3 when tied after seven frames.Â
JAGS WITH BASES LOADED
South Alabama is hitting .531 (26-for-49) with the bases loaded this season, led by Travis Swaggerty who has five hits with the bags full of Jags.
RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION
The Jags are batting .338 (98-for-290) with runners in scoring position. Eddie Paparella and Travis Swaggerty lead the team with 12 hits apiece with RISP.
TEN OR MORE RUNS
USA is 8-0 when scoring 10 or more runs this season and 12-3 when scoring six or more, but is 3-7 when scoring five or less.Â
HITTING, ON-BASE STREAKS
Travis Swaggerty carries a team-best 22-game on-base streak into the series, having reached base safely in every game he has played this season. Brendan Donovan carries a team-best four-game hitting streak into the weekend.
HOME RUN PRODUCTION
South Alabama has homered in five of its last seven games, but has not hit a home run in its last two contests. The Jaguars have homered in 13 of their 25 games this season, and have 25 home runs entering the weekend. USA hit 31 home runs in 2016.
JAG BATS IN SBC GAMES
South Alabama is hitting .332 with 16 doubles, seven home runs, 60 RBI, 71 runs scored and nine stolen bases in six Sun Belt Conference games. Brendan Donovan leads the league in batting average (.571), runs scored (10) and OBP (.700) in conference games, while catcher Jared Barnes leads in slugging percentage (.895) and hit by pitch (4) and Travis Swaggerty leads in RBI (10). Donovan and Swaggerty share the league lead in stolen bases (4) in conference contests.Â
BELL AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS
Right-hander Randy Bell enters Friday's start tied with Coastal Carolina's Alex Cunningham for the SBC lead in strikeouts (47). Bell tossed seven shutout innings and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in last weekend's win over Georgia State.
HUSTON STRIKES OUT CAREER HIGHÂ
Left-hander Thomas Huston struck out a career-high eight batters in seven innings of work in last Saturday's win over Georgia State at Stanky Field. It marked the third consecutive outing in which the southpaw bettered his career-high mark in strikeouts. Huston enters the weekend ranked eighth in the conference in ERA (2.78) after allowing four earned runs in each of his last two starts.Â
CARR'S CAREER DAY AT GEORGIA SOUTHERNÂ
Right-hander Tyler Carr struck out a career-high 10 batters in 6 2/3 scoreless innings pitched to earn his first career win in the series finale at Georgia Southern (March 19).Â
SWAGGERTY NAMED SBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Travis Swaggerty was named the SBC Player of the Week after batting .438 with two home runs, seven RBI, eight runs scored and three stolen bases while posting a .591 on-base percentage and .812 slugging percentage in four games last week. He hit safely in three of four contests, recording multiple hits each game, and drove in at least one run in every game. Swaggerty was also named the SBC Player of the Week on March 14 after hitting .556 with two doubles, one home run, nine RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases while posting a .636 on-base percentage and .833 slugging percentage in five games.Â
