ResultsMOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team fell to No. 50 Old Dominion 4-0 Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Jaguars dropped to 12-11 for the season, while the Monarchs improved to 16-4.
"Today, Old Dominion was playing well, and it didn't go our way," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "It was competitive, and we saw some good things that are going to help us down the road."
In doubles, senior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) and sophomore
Oliver Gingras (Quebec, Canada) lost 6-3 to No. 37
Adam Moundir and
Aziz Kijametovic at the No. 1 court. After being down 4-1,
Jacob Nicolussi and
Jose Nunez Navarro dropped juniors
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and
Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) 6-4 at No. 3 to secure the doubles point for ODU.
"I thought doubles slipped through our fingers," Brochu said. "The game plan is, if you are winning on one, you've got to try to close it as quickly as possible and put the pressure on the other team. If we would have done so at No. 3, that would have put a little bit more pressure on No. 2, and it would have played in our favor. Unfortunately, we let them come back. We were in the position of almost winning, but ODU came back."
In singles, Old Dominion took three straight singles decisions to clinch the victory. At court No. 3,
Michael Weindl defeated senior
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) 6-3, 6-2, and Kijametovic topped senior
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2.
Zvonimir Podvinski took the deciding contest 6-1, 7-5 over Gingras at the No. 5 spot.
"Old Dominion is having a good season, probably the best season they've had in a long time," said Brochu. "We've got to learn to really stay focused and close the matches when we have a chance."
The Jaguars return to the court next Sunday at 10 a.m. as they close their regular season at Troy.
