MOBILE, Ala. – The 23rd-ranked University of South Alabama baseball team will travel to Auburn, Ala., for a 6 p.m. contest against Auburn Tuesday at Plainsman Park.
The game will be broadcast live by the SEC Network+, and available through WatchESPN. It will also be broadcast live on 99.5 FM The Jag, and can be accessed via the iHeartRadio app as well. USA (30-11) will send right-hander Randy Bell (3-1) to the mound for his sixth start of the season. Bell has posted three straight quality starts, having pitched at least eight innings and struck out seven batters in each of his last three outings. He is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts, which spans a total of 25 innings.
Auburn (18-22) will counter with left-hander Andrew Mitchell (4-2), who will make his ninth start of the year. In 43 1/3 innings pitched, Mitchell has struck out 39 batters and issued 27 walks while recording a 4.98 ERA in 13 total appearances. Opponents are hitting .277 against him.
South Alabama went 3-1 last week after defeating Alabama last Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, behind Bell, and taking two of three games from Southern last weekend at Stanky Field. The Jaguars lead the Sun Belt Conference in runs scored (273), RBI (240), walks (226), sacrifice flies (23) and stolen bases (75). The USA pitching staff ranks second in the league in ERA (3.27), runs allowed (159) and earned runs allowed (134).
Drew LaBounty leads the SBC in walks (33) and is tied for the league lead in sacrifice flies (6). LaBounty ranks fourth in the conference in on-base percentage (.453) and stolen bases (11), seventh in RBI (33) and ninth in runs scored (33). Cole Billingsley leads the league in stolen bases (22), is tied with LaBounty for the SBC lead in sacrifice flies (6), ranks tied for third in triples (3) and tied for sixth in sacrifice bunts (8). Travis Swaggerty ranks second in the league in stolen bases (13), third in walks (31) and on-base percentage (.455) and tied for fifth in runs scored (36).
Jared Barnes ranked tied for seventh in the conference in home runs (6), and is eighth in the league in slugging percentage (.526). Danny Martinez ranks fifth in the SBC in RBI (36), and is tied for fifth in walks (28).
Left-hander Shane McKinley ranks fourth in the conference in saves (6), while southpaw James Traylor enters the week tied for fifth in the league in wins (5).Â
Auburn (18-22) enters the contest with a three-game losing streak after getting swept at Mississippi last weekend in Oxford. The Tigers are 15-10 at home this season, and have won three straight games at Plainsman Park. Joshua Palacios leads the team in batting average (.408), triples (4), slugging percentage (.654) and on-base percentage (.487). The Tigers enter the game with a .312 team batting average and 4.31 team ERA in 30 contests.
South Alabama holds a 48-24 all-time lead over Auburn in a series that dates back to 1968. The Jaguars defeated the Tigers 7-4 last year at Stanky Field in the last meeting between the schools. Auburn defeated USA 6-1 in 2014, which marked the last time the schools met in Auburn.Â
