MOBILE, Ala. – The 23rd-ranked University of South Alabama baseball team will host Southern in a three-game series this weekend at Stanky Field.
Game one of the series will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and game two of the series will also begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Sunday's series finale is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
All three games of the series will be streamed live and available through JagNationTV.com. South Alabama right-hander Kevin Hill (7-1) will make his 10th start of the season in the series opener. Hill, who was recently named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason watch list as well as the 2016 National Pitcher of the Year watch list by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, leads the SBC in strikeouts (78) and ERA (1.78), and is tied for the league lead in innings pitched (70.2) and wins (7) in nine total starts. His 78 strikeouts ranks tied for sixth nationally, and is just two behind the nation's leader at 80. Hill has tossed three complete games and combined for one shutout this season. He currently ranks sixth in career strikeouts (278) at USA, and is just 20 shy of passing former Jaguar right-hander Jon Lieber (298) for fourth on the all-time list.
Southern (11-22) will send right-hander Daniel Franklin (3-3) to the mound for his ninth start of the season in the series opener. Franklin has struck out 39 batters against 27 walks in 51 1/3 innings this year, and carries a 4.21 ERA into the contest.
USA right-hander Hunter Soleymani (3-1) will make his ninth start of the season in game two. Soleymani tossed his first career complete game last weekend at Appalachian State, and carries a 3.76 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 55 innings into the game. Southern will counter with left-hander J'Markus George (4-3), who will make his 10th start of the year. George has 52 strikeouts with 33 walks and a 3.83 ERA in 51 2/3 innings pitched.
The Jags will send right-hander Austin Bembnowski (4-1) to the mound for this ninth start of the season in the series finale. Bembnowski has struck out 31 batters and limited the opposition to a .240 batting average in 38 2/3 innings this season. Southern has not announced its starter for game three.
USA (28-10) enters its non-conference weekend having won two of its last three games after defeating Alabama 8-2 Wednesday in Tuscaloosa. The Jaguars lead the Sun Belt Conference in stolen bases (65), sacrifice flies (22), walks (207), runs scored (250) and RBI (222). USA is tied with Louisiana-Lafayette for the best fielding percentage (.976) in the league, while the Jaguar pitching staff ranks second in the conference in runs allowed (151) and third in ERA (3.35), opposing batting average (.244), hits allowed (311), walks allowed (116), earned runs allowed (127). USA is 20-2 at Stanky Field this season, and enters the series with a 14-game home winning streak.
Jaguar center fielder Cole Billingsley leads the SBC in stolen bases (20), and is tied with Drew LaBounty for the league lead in sacrifice flies (6). LaBounty, who was recently named to the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award watch list, also ranks second in the conference in walks (29), third in stolen bases (10), fourth in on-base percentage (.455) and tied for seventh in RBI (30).
Right fielder Travis Swaggerty carries a career-long 10-game hitting streak into the series, along with a 22-game on-base streak. Swaggerty ranks ranks third in the Sun Belt in walks (28), fourth in stolen bases (9), fifth in runs scored (34) and seventh in on-base percentage (.444). Jared Barnes ranks tied for sixth in home runs (6), and seventh in the league in slugging percentage (.551).
Southern swept Prairie View A&M last weekend before falling to Loyola-New Orleans Tuesday. SU is 6-11 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season, and 4-7 in road games. Southern is led by Dondrayas Harris, who leads the team in hits (39), triples (2), RBI (29), total bases (61), slugging percentage (.604) and hit by pitch (10). SU is batting .264 as a team, while the pitching staff enters the series with a 6.56 team ERA.
