MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will travel to Biloxi, Miss., to face Nicholls State at MGM Park at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.
USA (18-6) carries a three-game winning streak into the contest, which will be broadcast live on WNTM 710 AM in Mobile and also available via the iHeartRadio app. The Jags have won six of their last seven contests, but have dropped their last three midweek contests.
South Alabama right-hander Ryne Long (2-0) will make his first start of the season in the game. Long has made four relief appearances this season, and carries a 0.82 ERA in 11 innings pitched into the matchup.
Nicholls State will send right-hander Daniel Goff (0-1) to the mound for his third start of the season. Goff has made 12 appearances, and carries a 3.47 ERA with 13 strikeouts against six walks in 23 1/3 innings pitched this season. Opponents are hitting just .198 against him. NSU (10-14) will face Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday night before taking on USA Wednesday.Â
South Alabama leads the SBC in walks (111), which ranks 18th nationally, and stolen bases (36). USA ranks second in the league in sacrifice flies (12). The Jags are fourth in the SBC in sacrifice bunts (25), which ranks 15th nationally.
The Jags are tied for second in the conference in fielding percentage (.976), and rank third in fewest errors committed (22). The Jaguar pitching staff ranks second in the conference in fewest walks allowed (70), and third in fewest runs allowed (102).
First baseman Danny Martinez carries a 29-game on-base streak, dating back to last year, into the weekend. He ended the 2015 season with a five-game on-base streak, and has reached safely in each of the Jaguars' first 24 games this season. Martinez also carries a team-best nine-game hitting streak into the week, and is tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference in RBI (22).
Cole Billingsley enters Wednesday's contest with a seven-game hitting streak, while Drew LaBounty has hit safely in five straight games. Travis Swaggerty carries a four-game hitting streak into the game.
Billingsley leads the conference with 11 stolen bases, and is tied for the league lead in sacrifice flies (4). LaBounty is tied for second stolen bases (6), and is 10th in batting average (.341) and on-base percentage (.433). Left-hander Shane McKinley enters the week tied for the SBC lead in saves with five.
South Alabama holds a 32-17 all-time lead over Nicholls State in a series that dates back to 1974. The schools did not meet last year after splitting a pair of games in 2014. Wednesday's contest will mark USA's second at MGM Park this season. The Jags defeated Southern Mississippi 4-2 earlier this year in Biloxi.
