No. 71 MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER

MOBILE, Ala.
– The No. 71 University of South Alabama men's tennis team won against Nicholls State 6-1 and Mercer 4-1 Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

With the wins, the Jaguars improved to 6-2 on the year.

Against Mercer, the doubles portion began with Ruben Vannopen and Sam Philp winning 6-0 over Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) and Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) at No. 3. USA fought back with a 6-1 victory from Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and Dallas Teague (Spanish Fort, Ala.) over Fernando Guardia and Nicolas Guillon at No. 2.

However, Mercer took the doubles point when Arnav Mohanty and Arsav Mohanty defeated Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) and Oliver Gingras (Quebec, Canada) 7-5 at No. 1.

"They played really good doubles," Brochu said. "We started very well, but they fought back and won the doubles point."

In singles, Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Anderson Scarpa. At No. 2, Jacobs beat Philp 6-4, 6-4, and Srkala rallied at No. 1 to defeat Guillon 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to give the Jaguars a 3-1 lead.

"It's good to see a senior like Troglia winning in straight sets and fairly quickly to even the match at one-all," said Brochu. "Winning at No. 3 quickly was the key to victory."

Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux, France) secured the victory for USA by dropping Zacharia El Ayat 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at No. 6.

"It feels good when you come back from behind," Brochu said. "That was a good way to wrap up the weekend, and now we need to get some rest before the next trip."

Against Nicholls State, South Alabama opened the doubles portion with a 6-2 victory from Gruindelingh and Gingras at No. 1 over Sam Meessen and Oleksander Podgursky. Srkala and Noyon clinched the doubles point by defeating Kieran Cronin and Evan Karatzas 6-4 at No. 2.

In singles, Srkala dropped Meessen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, and Noyon bested Podgursky 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 to put the Jags up 3-0. Troglia sealed the win for the Jaguars with a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory over Cronin at No. 3.

At No. 2, Jacobs defeated Karatzas 7-5, 7-5. Nicholls' Max Sinn won 3-6, 6-4, (10-5) over Gruindelingh at No. 6, and Teague finished the match by topping Oscar Reeve 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5.

The Jaguars head to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on Utah Saturday afternoon.
