MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will face Southern Mississippi in back-to-back days, beginning with Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. contest at Stanky Field.
USA (6-1) and USM (7-0) will follow Tuesday's matchup with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss., the home of the Double-A Biloxi Shuckers.
Jaguar right-hander Hunter Soleymani (0-0) will make his second start of the season, while USM left-handed freshman Stevie Powers (0-0) will make his first career start. Neither school has announced a starter for Wednesday's contest in Biloxi.
The Jaguars won two of three games at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga., last weekend after defeating Georgia and Cincinnati and falling to Western Kentucky. Southern Miss swept its three-game series with Northwestern State in Hattiesburg, Miss.
USA holds a 58-32 all-time series lead over USM after the Golden Eagles won both contests between the schools last year. Tuesday's game will mark the first time this season USM has played away from home.
South Alabama ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference in batting average (.304), slugging percentage (.433), on-base percentage (.414), runs scored (54), RBI (50), walks (37) and hit by pitch (10), ranks third in the league in doubles (14), tied for third in home runs (5) and is fourth in hits (73).Â
The Jaguar pitching staff ranks second in the league in fewest walks allowed (17), tied for second in saves (2), tied for third in runs allowed (26) and tied for fourth in fewest hits allowed (55). South Alabama is tied with Georgia State and Louisiana-Lafayette with the fewest errors committed (4), and enters the week tied for second in the conference with a .985 fielding percentage.
Drew LaBounty leads the SBC with 12 RBI, while Danny Martinez ranks second (10) entering the week. Third baseman Ben Gann carries a career-best 10-game hitting streak, dating back to last year, into Tuesday's contest.
