NO. 29 JAG BASEBALL TO FACE ULL IN SBC ACTION




MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 29 University of South Alabama baseball team will travel to Lafayette, La., for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana-Lafayette this weekend at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

The three-game set, which marks USA's final regular-season road series, will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday night. Game two is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch Saturday, and will be streamed live on ESPN3. The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The series opener and finale will be streamed live and available for purchase through the All-Access section of RaginCajuns.com. All three games of the series will be broadcast live on WNTM 710 AM in Mobile, and can be also be accessed via the iHeartRadio app.

USA right-hander Kevin Hill (8-0) will make his 10th start of the season in the series opener. Hill leads the Sun Belt Conference in strikeouts (78) and opposing batting average (.199), is tied for the league lead in wins (8) and ranks second in ERA (2.06). He has tossed three consecutive complete games in his last three starts against SBC opponents, and has struck out 38 batters and issued nine walks and allowed 12 hits during that 27-inning span.

Austin Bembnowski (2-3) will make his ninth start of the season in game two, while left-hander Jared Gates (4-2) is scheduled to make his 12th start of the year in the series finale.

ULL will send a trio of freshmen to the mound, with left-hander Gunner Leger (5-3) getting the start in the series opener. Right-hander Evan Guillory (3-0) will start game two for the Ragin' Cajuns, while right-hander Wyatt Marks (5-1) will start the finale.

South Alabama (32-17, 17-7 SBC) enters the weekend with a seven-game winning streak in conference games, and has won nine of its last 10 league contests. USA, ranked 29th in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll, sits atop the SBC standings heading into the weekend series, while ULL enters the weekend in third place. The Jaguars lead the Sun Belt in batting average (.285), on-base percentage (.380), hits (488), walks (225), sacrifice flies (25) and stolen bases (71), are tied for first in triples (15) and rank second in runs scored (288).

The USA pitching staff leads the league in ERA (3.33), strikeouts (406) and opposing batting average (.244), and the Jags also lead the conference with a .975 fielding percentage.

Reigning SBC Player of the Week Cole Billingsley leads the league in stolen bases (23), and is tied for the conference lead in hits (67). Billingsley ranks fourth in the SBC in OBP (.443) and is sixth in batting average (.344). Bud Collura ranks third in the league with 66 hits.

ULL (30-17, 14-9 SBC) dropped two of three games at Appalachian State last weekend. The Ragin' Cajuns are 18-7 at home, and have won five straight games in Lafayette. SBC Preseason Player of the Year selection Blake Trahan leads the Ragin' Cajuns in batting average (.357), runs scored (40), hits (65), walks (31) and stolen bases (15), and is tied for the team lead in doubles (14). Louisiana-Lafayette enters the weekend with a .278 team batting average and 3.50 team ERA.

USA holds a 58-41 all-time lead over ULL in a series that began in 1975. The Ragin' Cajuns have won the last six meetings between the schools, with the Jags' last win coming in 2013 with they took two of three games in a regular-season series in Lafayette.
