NEW ORLEANS
– With four straight sets singles victories, the University of South Alabama men's tennis team advanced to the Sun Belt Conference finals after a 4-1 win over Texas-Arlington on Saturday at the City Park Tennis Center.

The 69th-ranked Jaguars improve to 16-8 in their spring campaign, while the Mavericks, ranked No. 65, end their season at 12-7.

"It was a great match today," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Texas-Arlington is a good team. We didn't play them any this season, but we heard about how tough they were. For a while, we were cruising at the top four spots then they made the match last. We had to dig deep. It was a great semifinal match."

The third-seeded Jags will face top-seeded Troy (No. 60) tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. at the City Park Tennis Center.

Senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany), ranked No. 89, dropped Sebastian Erimicioiu 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot to give USA an early 1-0 lead. Junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Stefan Williams at No. 3.

With South Alabama up 2-0, sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) dropped Johnathan Gonzalez 6-4, 6-1 on the No. 4 court, but Daniel Armengol picked up a point for UTA when he edged junior Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.

"The guys did great today," said Brochu. "As soon as we had the chance to close it, we did. Daniel, Tuki and Juan won fairly quick and put us on the board 3-0, and that put the pressure on UTA."

Clinching the win for the Jags, junior Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) downed Mario Muniesa 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.

"It was a really good match, but a very tough match," said Gruindelingh. "I've played the guy before and beat him in three sets, so I knew he was a very aggressive player. My teammates were supporting me through the whole match, and that really helped me a lot."
