MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will open Sun Belt Conference play this weekend when it hosts Arkansas-Little Rock in a three-game series at Stanky Field.
First pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, and game two is set for a 6:30 start on Saturday. The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday. USA (9-4) will send right-handed senior Kevin Hill (0-0) to the mound in the opener, while UALR will counter with right-hander Cory Malcolm (1-1). Malcom ranks ninth in the SBC in ERA (1.06) and has one save with 13 strikeouts and three walks in 17 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .213 against him. Neither school has announced starters for the remaining games in the series.
South Alabama enters the weekend with the most wins in the Sun Belt, as well as leaders in batting average (.307), on-base percentage (.428), runs scored (91), hits (134), RBI (76), walks (73), hit by pitch (28) and sacrifice flies (11). The Jags are tied for second in the league with 19 stolen bases, which matches last season's total in 55 games.
Bud Collura leads the Sun Belt in hits (19) and runs scored (13), and Adam Ballew enters the weekend as the league's RBI leader with 14. Drew LaBounty leads the conference in on-base percentage (.551), and is eighth in the league in batting average (.371).
UALR (3-5) fell to Oklahoma 22-0 Tuesday in Norman, Okla. The Trojans shut out SIU-Edwardsville in consecutive games last weekend in Little Rock. UALR enters the weekend tied with Texas State and Texas-Arlington with the fewest wins in the league at three.
USA holds a 62-12 all-time lead over UALR in a series that began in 1992. The Jags took two of three games from the Trojans last season in Little Rock, and have won seven of the last eight contests dating back to 2012.
