ULM AVOIDS SWEEP, TAKES GAME THREE OVER JAG BASEBALL

Box score

MONROE, La. – Louisiana-Monroe left-hander Trey Setzer allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings to lead the Warhawks to a 4-3 win over the University of South Alabama baseball team Sunday at Warhawk Field.

Setzer (4-0) allowed two earned runs on eight hits, and struck out four USA batters while issuing one walk to earn his fourth win of the season. Anthony Herrera pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts to earn his second save of the year. Jaguar left-hander Jared Gates (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout in the loss.

ULM took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run to right field by Kodie Tidwell. A ball hit to left-center off the bat of Justin Stawychny appeared to double the Warhawk lead later in the frame, but Cole Billingsley saved a home run by robbing Stawychny with a leaping catch at the wall in left-center field to keep the Jaguar deficit at one run.

A two-out, two-run double by Keelin Rasch in the bottom of the second extended the ULM lead to 3-0. But the Jags answered in the top of the fifth on a two-out RBI single to center field by Ryan Raspino to cut the ULM lead to 3-1.

ULM pushed its lead back to three runs with a two-out, RBI double to center field by Stawychny in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-1 advantage. But the Jags answered in the top of the sixth.

Consecutive singles from Bolger and Collura put runners at the corners with no outs in the top of the sixth. Ballew followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Bolger and cut the ULM lead in half at 4-2.

USA loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh on a hit by pitch to DeGallier from Setzer, and consecutive singles from Raspino and Billingsley. But Setzer escaped the jam with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Bolger.

The Jags cut the ULM lead to one run in the top of the eighth. Collura reached on a fielding error by Tidwell at shortstop to lead off the inning. Martinez followed with a single to right field to put runners at the corners with two outs. Martinez then stole second, and Collura scored the Jags' final run on the play when ULM catcher Spencer Hemphill's throw to second sailed into center field.

Billingsley went 3-for-5 to lead South Alabama offensively, and Raspino finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Rasch went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Warhawks at the plate.

USA will return to action Tue., March 31, when it hosts Mississippi State at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.
