TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team earned their third sweep of the season with a 7-0 victory over Florida A&M on Monday at the Rattler Tennis Center.
South Alabama, ranked No. 47, improved to 7-3 in their spring campaign and 2-1 on the road.
"It feels good to get a 7-0 win," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Some guys still struggled but closed the match in good fashion."
After sweeping doubles with three 6-1 wins, the Jags took all six singles matches, with four in straight sets. Freshman Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) gave USA a 2-0 lead when he downed Jason Ulacio 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6, and junior Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) topped Carlos Waitman 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 flight.
No. 84 senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) secured the win for the Jaguars when he dropped Walner Espinoza 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot.
Junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) followed with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Joel Ovonlen-Jones on the No. 5 court, and junior Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) defeated Karlyn Small 6-3, 5-7, (10-5) at No. 1. Sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) earned the final point for South Alabama when he outlasted Courage Okungbowa 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), (10-5) at the No. 4 spot.
In doubles action, Srkala and Gingras downed Waitman and Ulacio at No. 2, Leitner and Troglia won at the No. 1 spot over Espinoza and Okungbowa, and Gruindelingh and Jacobs topped Ovonlen-Jones and Small in the No. 3 flight.
"It was great to see how our doubles was good and energetic," said Brochu. "Today was great preparation for our next match against a strong North Florida opponent. We will polish a few things tomorrow at practice before battling it out on Wednesday night."
The Jaguars are back in action Wednesday as they head to face No. 55 UNF at 4 p.m.
