Diogo Casa and
Joel Rubio defeated junior
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) and freshman
Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) 6-2 at No. 2, but
sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) edged Yannick Junger and Jake Rother 6-3 on the No. 3 court.Senior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and junior
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa), ranked No. 61 in doubles, were handed their first loss of the season when they fell 7-6 (7-4) to Tito Moreiras and Tomas Stillman at the No. 1 spot.
"Today was hard," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "We played great doubles but came up short. When the last match came down to the No. 1 court, we felt very confident since our two guys are undefeated, but UTSA came up really big."
In singles action,
Joao Riquelme gave UTSA a 2-0 lead when he dropped Gruindelingh 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4, and Casa followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gingras in the No. 6 flight. Rubio secured the match for the Roadrunners with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Troglia at No. 3.
Jacobs earned the lone point for the Jaguars when he topped
Mark Ginting 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 on the No. 5 court.
Skrala fell 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to No. 77 Stillman at the No. 1 spot, and Leitner, ranked No. 75, lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to Moreiras at No. 2.
"We played well and competed hard in singles," said Brochu. "We missed a few points here and there and lost two really close sets at Nos. 1 and 3. Winning those two first sets would have changed the overall match. We had some momentum after winning the first sets on courts 2 and 5, but UTSA was too solid today."
South Alabama returns home to face No. 61 Memphis on Monday, March 23 at noon.
