JAG BASEBALL TO HOST BROWN THIS WEEKEND

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will open a nine-game home stand, beginning this weekend with a four-game series against Brown at Stanky Field.

The series will open with game one at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, followed by a doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. The series finale is set for a noon first pitch on Sunday.

All four games of the series will be broadcast live on WNTM 710 AM in Mobile, and will also be available via the iHeartRadio app. Every Jaguar home game will be streamed live and available for purchase through the All-Access section of USAJaguars.com. Live stats for each USA game are available through the multimedia section of USAJaguars.com, while in-game updates are provided via Twitter.com/SouthALBaseball.

Right-hander Cameron Cochran (1-0) will make his first career start at USA in the series opener. Cochran has recorded four strikeouts without issuing a walk, and has yet to allow an earned run in two relief appearances this season. Right-hander Ryne Long (0-1) will make his third start of the year in game two of the series, which will serve as game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Long carries as 3.12 ERA into the game after allowing three runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings against No. 15 Arkansas last weekend. The right-hander tossed four scoreless innings in his Jaguar debut against New Orleans on Feb. 14.

Freshman left-hander Zach McMullen (0-1) will make his second start of the season in Saturday's nightcap. The southpaw struck out five and did not issue a walk in five innings last weekend in his collegiate debut against No. 22 Central Florida.

Brown will send of trio of right-handers to the mound in its season-opening series. Dave St. Lawrence will get the start in the series opener. St. Lawrence went 1-6 with a 5.44 ERA in eight starts last season, and struck out 32 batters against 11 walks in 49 2/3 innings pitched. Opponents hit .295 against him in 2014, while he allowed a team-high five home runs.

Freshman Reid Anderson will start the first game of Saturday's twinbill for Brown. Anderson prepped at Aledo High School in Aledo, Texas. Senior righty Eddie Fitzpatrick will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader for the Bears. Fitzpatrick missed the entire 2014 season due to injury, but made 14 appearances with one start in 2013 with two wins and 28 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.

Neither school has announced a starter for Sunday's series finale.

South Alabama (5-3) snapped a three-game losing skid with a 6-3 win at Alabama State Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala. The Jaguars are hitting .285 as a team entering the weekend series, while the pitching staff carries a 3.75 ERA into Friday's opener. The USA bullpen has recorded five wins and two saves while posting a 1.79 ERA in 45 1/3 innings. Jaguar relievers have combined for 34 strikeouts against 10 walks while limiting the opposition to a .214 batting average.

Brown finished 13-24 overall and 6-15 in the Ivy League last season, and must replace its top two hitters – according to batting average – including its home run and RBI leader. The Bears hit .254 as a team, while the Brown pitching staff recorded a 5.48 ERA in 2014.
