MOBILE, Ala. – Looking to pick up their third win of the season, the University of South Alabama men's tennis team hosts Jacksonville State on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Thursday will mark the third meeting between the two teams. USA leads the all-time series with JSU 2-0. The Jaguars edged the Gamecocks 4-3 last February.
"Jacksonville State is similar to Nicholls, who we played last week," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "The doubles point will be important for us to win and set the tone for singles. Like last year when we played them, having a strong start and taking the early lead is definitely our main goal. We need to set a pace they won't be able to follow."
South Alabama enters the match with a 2-2 mark overall, after topping Nicholls State 5-2 last Saturday.
Senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and junior Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) helped propel the Jags to their victory over the Colonels. The duo downed Bernard Wezeman and Kieran Cronin 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. Srkala picked up the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, and Leitner secured the match for USA when he won 6-4, 6-3 on the No. 1 court.
"I'm looking forward to seeing, once again, the great leadership from our senior captain Daniel and our newcomer Tim," said Brochu.
Jacksonville State is currently 1-2 overall after playing all three matches on the road. The Gamecocks picked up a 4-0 win over Alcorn State on Sunday when they took the doubles point and three singles victories in straight sets.
