MOBILE, Ala
. – University of South Alabama senior Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) earned two victories, including a win at No. 1 singles to secure the match in the Jaguars' 5-2 win over Nicholls State on Saturday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

USA improved to 2-2 in their spring campaign, while NSU dropped to 0-2 overall.

"It was a good match today, considering it's early in the season," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Some guys still have a lot of work to do. These are the matches we need to get in shape for the end of the season, which is the most important."

Leitner picked up his second singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Partha Adavelly. Leitner teamed up with junior Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) to claim the first doubles win when they downed Bernard Wezeman and Kieran Cronin 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.

"Daniel played very solid today," said Brochu. "He won the big points when he needed to and he stayed very focused."

South Alabama earned three singles wins in straight sets. Srkala put the Jags up 2-0 when he dropped Adavelly 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 flight and junior Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) followed up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lukas Clemens at No. 5.

"I really liked the way Tim played today," said Brochu. "He took the lead early and never let it go or let the guy come back. That's the way we want to play. He was in full control of his match. He gave us the first singles point, which was important."

After Leitner's win at No.1, senior Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) fell 6-2, 6-3 to Wezeman on the No. 3 court. Cronin picked up the second and final point for the Colonels when he edged freshman Olivier Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) 7-5, 7-5 at the No. 6 position.

Sophomore Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) dropped his first set 7-5, but rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, (10-8) win over Evan Karatzas at No. 4.

In doubles action, Troglia and Jacobs secured the doubles point for USA with a 6-4 victory over Adavelly and Karatzas on the No. 3 court.

The Jaguars return to action Thursday, Jan. 29 at 2:30 p.m. when they host Jacksonville State.
