MOBILE, Ala. – The seventh-seeded University of South Alabama baseball team will open play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament against No. 2 Texas-Arlington Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.
USA (22-31) will start right-hander Ben Taylor (3-4), while UTA (30-25) will start right-hander Daniel Milliman (5-0). The game will be broadcast live on WNSP 105.5 FM in Mobile, and can be accessed online at WNSP.com. Each game of the tournament will also be streamed live and available at SunBeltSports.org.
The Mavericks swept a three-game series from the Jaguars earlier this season at Stanky Field, which marked the first meeting between the schools. USA hit .224 with three doubles, four RBI and six runs in the three-game set, while UTA batted .286 with seven doubles, 16 RBI and 20 runs. The USA pitching staff posted a 4.76 ERA in the series while UTA pitchers combined for a 1.00 ERA.
The winner of Wednesday's contest will play the winner of the 4 p.m. Wednesday matchup between No. 6 Troy and No. 3 Arkansas State at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, while the loser will face the loser of the Troy-ASU game at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
South Alabama has hosted the SBC Tournament 11 times, and won it on five of those occasions (1980, '84, '92, '96, 2000). USA last hosted the tournament in 2007, and finished in fourth place.
Family Fun Night will be held Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Stanky Field, and will feature a home run derby with a participant from each school as well as fireworks. Student-athletes will also be available for autographs after the event.
