WILLIAMS’ COMPLETE GAME LEADS TSU OVER USA, EVENS SERIES 1-1

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State right-hander Austen Williams tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Bobcats to a 2-0 win over University of South Alabama baseball Saturday at Bobcat Ballpark.

Williams (4-1) allowed just four hits, and struck out seven while issuing only one walk. He allowed just two hits over his final five innings pitched. Jaguar right-hander Kevin Hill (2-4) also pitched a complete game but took the loss, allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. Hill also allowed only two hits over his final five frames.

TSU (18-12, 7-4 SBC) struck for a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to center field by Colby Targun that scored Preston Dorsey, who led off the inning with a bunt single to third base then stole second before advancing to third on a groundout to first base off the bat of Matt Smith.

The Bobcats added the game's final run in the bottom of the fifth. Smith reached on a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a groundout to first by Targun before scoring on a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield by Garrett Mattlage.

South Alabama (14-16, 4-6 SBC) recorded its first hit off of Williams in the top of the third on a single through the left side of the infield by Drew LaBounty. From there, Williams allowed just three hits – singles by the Jags in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings. The Jags never advanced a runner beyond second base in the game.

Targun and Mattlage each singled and drove in a run to lead TSU at the plate. LaBounty, Justin Cullifer, Connor Hawthorne and Cameron Cummings had one hit apiece for USA.

The series will conclude with the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m.
