USA (19-24) enters the game having won two of its last three contests after its series win over Louisiana-Monroe last weekend at Stanky Field. The Jaguars are 9-12 in road games this season, and carry a three-game losing skid into Wednesday's contest. South Alabama's last road win came in the series opener at Western Kentucky April 18, while its last road win against a non-conference opponent came on March 12 in a 5-1 win at Southern Mississippi. The Jags are 4-7 in non-conference road games this season.
Jaguar right-hander Matt Sharp (0-0) is scheduled to make his first career start in Wednesday's contest. Sharp allowed three runs on one hit with a strikeout and two walks in one inning in his only career appearance, which came April 9 at Nicholls State. Alabama State has not announced a starter for the game.
ASU (33-16) took the final two games of its series with Jackson State last weekend. The Hornets have won five of their last six games, and are 18-7 at home this season. Waldyvan Estrada leads the Hornets in batting average (.343), while Emmanuel Marrero leads the team in hits (63), doubles (12), triples (8), RBI (52), total bases (100) and slugging percentage (.526). His eight triples leads the nation entering the week. ASU ranks third in the nation in sacrifice flies (32), and is fifth in runs (351) and hit by pitch (84).
South Alabama holds a 10-1 all-time lead over Alabama State in a series that dates back to 1987. ASU shut out USA 5-0 earlier this season at Stanky Field, which marked the first-ever win in the series for the Hornets. The Jags are 4-0 all-time at Alabama State after defeating the Hornets 5-1 last season in Montgomery.
