JAG BASEBALL FALLS AT SLU

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana used a five-run fifth inning to defeat University of South Alabama baseball 9-3 Tuesday at Alumni Field.

SLU (17-11) held a 3-2 lead through 4 1/2 innings, with single runs across in the first, third and fourth innings.

Sam Roberson reached on a one-out double down the left field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Jameson Fisher for a 1-0 SLU lead after one frame.

USA answered to tie the game 1-1 when Drew LaBounty led off the top of the third with a walk and advanced to second when Davis Knapp reached on a hit by pitch. Adam Ballew sacrificed each runner up a base before Hayden Jones followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop to score LaBounty.

SLU's Kennon Menard led off the bottom of the third with a single to center field, moved to second on a balk by Jaguar right-hander Matt Bell and advanced to third on a groundout to second by Jacob Williams. Roberson followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Menard and give the Lions a 2-1 lead.

But USA answered to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth when Erik Hindmon led off the inning with a solo home run to left field – his first as a Jaguar.

Consecutive singles gave the Lions runners at the corners with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Carr followed with an RBI single to right-center field to Midyett to give SLU a 3-2 lead.

After USA went in order in the top of the fifth, the Lions erupted to push five runs across highlighted by a three-run double by Williams for an 8-2 SLU advantage.

Jones led off the top of the sixth with a home run to left field to cut the Lion lead to 8-3. But SLU answered with a solo home run by Godbold to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the game's final run.

SLU left-hander Kyle Cedotal (1-1) earned the win in six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Bell (2-4) allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out two in four innings in the loss. USA southpaw J.A. Harville pitched two scoreless innings, and finished with a career-high three strikeouts.

Fisher went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead SLU at the plate. Jones finished 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Jags offensively.

South Alabama (13-14) will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Southern Mississippi at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.
