TAMPA, Fla. – No. 45 South Florida took the doubles point and all six singles matches to sweep the University of South Alabama men's tennis team on Friday at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars dropped to 10-5 in their spring campaign, while the Bulls improved to 7-3 overall.
"We fought hard," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "It was very high-level tennis today.
"We missed a big opportunity to beat an excellent team with a high ranking. We need to learn from today. We need to be tougher, especially against strong teams."
USF's combo of No. 35
Oliver Pramming and
Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz got the first win of the day with an 8-5 victory over junior
Manuel Belda (Posadas, Misiones, Argentina) and sophomore
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa) on the No. 1 court.
Roberto Cid and
Vadym Kalyuzhnyy clinched the doubles point when they topped junior
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) and freshman
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) 8-7 (7-4) at No. 2.
The Bulls' first singles point came on the No. 5 court when
Frederico Sabogal defeated Gruindelingh 6-1, 6-0. Belda fell 6-4, 6-2 to Pramming at No. 2.
Kalyuzhnyy secured the match for South Florida with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Jacobs in the No. 3 flight.
South Florida's final three points on the afternoon all came after losing the first set. Leitner, ranked No. 94, dropped just his second match of the season with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to No. 81 Cid at the No. 1 spot.
Finn Meinecke outlasted sophomore
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Gonzalez-Muniz rounded out the day when he edged senior
Shayann Vaezzadeh (Bavent, France) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on the No. 4 court.
"Halfway through the match, it looked like we could pull off the upset since we were winning on four courts and up 4-0 on another court, but everything fell apart for us," said Brochu. "I am extremely disappointed in the fact that we went away when USF fought back and raised their level of play."
South Alabama is back in action Tuesday March 11 as they host Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m.
