Box scoreMOBILE, Ala. – Texas-Arlington right-hander Daniel Milliman tossed six shutout innings to lead the Mavericks to a 6-1 win over University of South Alabama baseball Sunday at Stanky Field.
Milliman (3-0) allowed just one hit and struck out one, and retired 12 of the final 13 batters faced to earn his third win of the season. Right-hander Jess Amedee earned his first save of the year in 1 2/3 relief innings, and allowed just one hit with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Jaguar right-hander Hunter Soleymani (0-1) took the loss in 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Derek Miller went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored to lead the Mavericks at the plate. Adam Ballew finished 1-for-4 with an RBI to lead USA offensively.
UTA (12-16, 4-5 SBC) loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the second after JM Twichell and Levi Scott reached on a one-out single and one-out walk, respectively, and Travis Sibley reached on a fielding error by Hayden Jones at second base. But Soleymani escaped the jam without allowing a run to cross with an inning-ending strikeout of Peter Cuomo.
Sibley reached on a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, advanced to second on a wild pitch from Soleymani then scored on an RBI single to right field by Cuomo for a 1-0 UTA advantage. Miller followed with an RBI double just inside the third base line to double the Maverick lead to 2-0. Miller scored on wild pitch from Jaguar southpaw James Traylor later in the inning to extend the UTA lead to 3-0.
A two-out RBI single to left-center field from Greg McCall in the top of the seventh scored Ryan Bottger, who reached on a one-out walk, for a 4-0 UTA lead.
Cole Jarman and Drew LaBounty reached on consecutive singles with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, and advanced one base each on a sacrifice bunt to third by Garrett DeGallier. USA loaded the bases one batter later when Andrew Tindell reached on a one-out walk. Ballew followed with an RBI single to center field to cut the Maverick lead to 4-1.
UTA added the game's final runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run single to center field by Bottger.
South Alabama (13-13, 3-5 SBC) will return to action Tue., April 1, when it travels to Hammond, La., for a 6 p.m. contest with Southeastern Louisiana.
