LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana at Lafayette right-hander Austin Robichaux tossed a complete game to lead the third-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns to a 9-2 win over second-seeded University of South Alabama baseball Friday in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Robichaux (8-2) struck out five, did not issue a walk and allowed just one earned run on four hits. Jaguar right-hander Matt Bell (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on four hits with a strikeout and pair of walks in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
South Alabama (41-17) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jeff DeBlieux led off the game with a triple to center field, and scored one pitch later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bud Collura.
But ULL answered to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on a leadoff home run to center field by Dex Kjerstad, and took a 5-1 lead on a three-run homer by Caleb Adams in the bottom of the third.
The Cajuns increased their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double to right-center field by Kjerstad. Jace Conrad followed with a two-run single to right field to push the ULL lead to 8-1, and the Cajuns added their final run of the game on a Jaguar error.
Dustin Dalken singled with two outs in the top of the ninth to plate Jordan Patterson for the Jags’ final run of the game.
DeBlieux had a triple and a run scored, Dalken had a hit and an RBI and Collura drove in one run to lead USA.
USA will face Florida International at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening in an elimination game of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
