MOBILE, Ala. – 2013 University of South Alabama senior women's soccer midfielder Clarissa Hernandez was named to the Capital One Academic All-America ® Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced on Monday.
Hernandez was thrice named to the organization's All-District list in her Jaguar career; however, this marks the first advancement to a national pool of potential selections for the Pensacola, Fla., native. Hernandez's 3.93 grade-point average in the study of Chemical Engineering was enough to land the national award, which is shared by student-athletes from such institutions as Florida State, Tennessee, Wake Forest and Mississippi.
Hernandez was a four-year starter for USA in the central midfield, where she produced 18 goals and 17 assists for 53 career points that tie for the seventh-most in Jaguar history. Her 17 total assists ties for fifth-most in the history books.
Along with fellow seniors Jess Oram and Shelby Owen, Hernandez has played the most career games in a Jaguar uniform, 84.
Hernandez was named all-Sun Belt Conference in her final year of competition. She scored both of USA's goals in an opening-round defeat of Georgia State at the 2013 SBC Tournament, which the Jaguars eventually won for the first time in program history.
