OPENING TIP
South Alabama is 1-6 in true road games in the state of Texas since the start of the 2007-08 season and 0-2 at Texas all-time. This is the first meeting between the two schools since Dec. 20, 1986.
Despite shooting 39.4 percent from the field before halftime, USA scored 45 points in the first half on Friday, the team's highest first-half point total since scoring 45 against Troy on Jan. 29, 2011.
The Jaguars held Detroit to just 28.9 percent shooting from the floor, the lowest by a USA opponent since March 6, 2010. The Titans went just 1-for-14 (7.1%) on 3-pointers, the lowest percentage by an opponent since Nov. 13, 2009.
After committing 24 turnovers in the exhibition win over Mobile, the Jaguars had only 15 in the season opener vs. Detroit, with just five coming from guards. The backcourt had all 11 of the team's assists and four of the five guards had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.
Sophomore
Barrington Stevens III made his first start since Jan. 31 and dished out a career-high four assists with just two turnovers. He also added eight points and three rebounds.
With 17 points, senior
Antoine Allen led the Jaguars in scoring in a season opener for the second straight year. In USA's win at No. 25/24 Florida State to open the 2012-13 campaign, Allen came off the bench to hit 4 of 5 from 3-point land for 21 points. Against Detroit, he also went 4 of 5 from long range and converted five times in six attempts at the free throw line.
Detroit held senior
Augustine Rubit to just nine points, his fewest in a season opener in his career. Rubit made just three of his 10 field goal attempts. He needs one point for the 1,400 mark and seven to pass
Demetric Bennett for sixth place in USA history.
Rubit did grab 12 rebounds to become the seventh player in Sun Belt Conference history to grab 900 rebounds in a career. He enters Tuesday's contest with 903, eight shy of
Otis Smith of Jacksonville for sixth place. Rubit moved from ninth to seventh in league history during the game.
Junior
Mychal Ammons recorded a double-double in a season opener for the second consecutive season, scoring 13 points with a career-high 14 rebounds. He went 5-for-7 from the field, made his only 3-point attempt, and added two blocks. Ammons is one rebound short of doing it all three years as he totaled 15 points and nine rebounds at Mississippi State as a freshman in 2011-12.
Junior
Dionte Ferguson made his first appearance since the 2011-12 season when he was a member of the Morehead State program. He sat out last season due to transfer rules but returned on Friday and blocked a team-best three shots in just 11 minutes of work.
Freshman
Aakim Saintil was one of six newcomers to make their first collegiate appearance Friday and came off the bench to score 12 points. He dished out two assists with no turnovers and converted twice from 3-point land.
