TALLAHASSE, Fla.
– No. 32 Florida State won four singles matches and swept doubles to defeat the University of South Alabama men’s tennis team 5-2 Monday at the Speicher Tennis Center.

The Jaguars move to 1-1 in their spring campaign. The Seminoles improve their win streak to five matches, making their overall record 5-0.

“After the match yesterday we spoke a lot about being relentless and fighting for every point,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “When playing a team like Florida State, you can’t afford to take it easy for a point or two.”

No. 107 Dominic Cotrone got FSU on the board at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman Gerhard Gruindelingh. Sophomore Daniel Leitner tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jordan Kelly-Houston at the No. 1 spot.

Cristian Gonzalez Mendez defeated junior Shayann Vaezzadeh 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 to put the Seminoles up 2-1, followed by sophomore Blake Gregor’s 6-3, 6-2 loss to Andres Bucaro at the No. 6 position. Anderson Reed dropped senior Cody Hall 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot to secure the win for Florida State.

Senior Alex Bernard claimed the second Jaguars’ point by outlasting No. 99 Benjamin Lock 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 position.

“Some guys came out on fire and stepped up and had big wins,” said Brochu. “Other guys were not consistent with the effort in their level of play.”
In doubles action, Gregor and Hall fell 8-4 to João Gauer and Blake Davis at the No. 3 spot. Michael Rinaldi and Cotrone topped Vaezzadeh and Bernard 8-3 at No. 2.

Freshman Juan Troglia and Leitner lost 8-7 (7-3) to Lock and Bucaro at the No. 1 position.

“Doubles were good,” said Brochu. “I was impressed by the new pair, Daniel and Juan. In order to beat those ranked teams, we need to work harder in practice day in and day out.”

South Alabama is back in action Saturday Jan. 26 against No. 42 UNC Wilmington in Gainesville, Fla.
