MOBILE, Ala. – Southeastern Louisiana used a three-run third inning to knock off University of South Alabama baseball 6-3 Tuesday evening at Stanky Field.
Southeastern Louisiana (31-15) held a 1-0 lead after two innings after Cody Gougler singled to lead off the top of the second and later scored on an RBI groundout by Jacob Fisher.
The Lions loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third on consecutive singles by Alex Marse and Harry Slade, and a hit by pitch to Ben Hernandez. Brock Hebert was then hit by a pitch with the bases full to score Marse to double the SLU lead to 2-0. A Jaguar error followed to allow Slade to score and push the Lion lead to 3-0. Gougler drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hernandez and increase the SLU lead to 4-0.
USA scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single to right field by Dustin Dalken that scored Whitt Dorsey, who singled earlier in the inning, to cut the SLU lead to 4-1.
The Lions added a single run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez for a 5-1 lead.
South Alabama answered to cut the SLU lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Dalken that plated Dorsey, who led off the inning with a single.
SLU added its final run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Jonathan Pace, and the Jags added their final run in the bottom-half of the ninth on an RBI double to center field by Jordan Patterson.
SLU right-hander Josh Janway (3-3) earned the win in three innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and one strikeout. Stefan Lopez earned his 17th save of the season in 1/3 of an inning in relief.
Jarrett Bailey (1-2) suffered the loss in four innings, allowing five runs on five hits with a walk and one strikeout. Left-hander Andrew Fonzi allowed just one run on four hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks in five relief innings.
Nolan Earley went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored to lead the Jags at the plate. Whitt Dorsey added two hits and two runs, and Patterson finished 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Dalken added a hit and two RBI, and Brad Hook and Nick Zaharion finished with one hit each.
Slade went 3-for-5 with a run to lead the Lions at the plate.
South Alabama will return to action Wednesday when it travels to Jackson, Miss., for a 6 p.m. contest with Jackson State.
