MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will play five games in the next six days, beginning Tuesday when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana at 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.
South Alabama (18-26) enters the week after taking two of three games from Florida International over the weekend at Stanky Field to earn its second straight Sun Belt Conference series win and fourth this season. USA batted .327 with eight extra-base hits – eight doubles and one home run – 19 RBI and 21 runs scored in the three-game set.
Nick Zaharion ranks 10th in the SBC and leads USA with 38 RBI. Whitt Dorsey leads the Jags with a .327 batting average, while Jordan Patterson leads the team in hits (52), home runs (7), total bases (83) and slugging percentage (.497).
Southeastern Louisiana (30-15) took two of three games from Northwestern State over the weekend. The Lions are led by Brock Hebert, who holds the team lead in batting average(.409), runs scored (47), hits (70), doubles (18), total bases (95), slugging percentage (.556), walks (23), on-base percentage (.493) and stolen bases (33). Hebert was tied for fifth nationally in stolen bases entering last week.
USA holds a 38-12 all-time series lead over SLU. The Jags have dropped two straight contests to the Lions, and three of the last four meetings. South Alabama last defeated Southeastern Louisiana in 2010, when the Jaguars knocked off SLU, who was ranked 22nd at the time, by a score of 12-11. SLU is 10-10 in road games this season.
The Jags will head to Jackson, Miss., Wednesday for its final non-conference game of the season when they take on Jackson State at 6 p.m. at Robert Braddy Field.
The Jags defeated JSU 12-4 on Feb. 21 at Stanky Field in the schools’ previous meeting this season.
JSU (28-14) has dropped three of its last four games entering the week after consecutive losses to Southern over the weekend. Kendall Logan leads the Tigers in batting average (.338), runs scored (35), hits (53), home runs (10) and RBI (49).
Jackson State is 14-1 at home this season. South Alabama holds an 11-0 all-time series lead over the Tigers.
