JAG BASEBALL TO HOST GOLDEN EAGLES TUESDAY

Whitt Dorsey hit .571 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and scored five runs last week.






MOBILE, Ala.  – The University of South Alabama baseball team will host Southern Miss at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Stanky Field.

South Alabama (13-23, 8-7 SBC) enters the Tuesday’s contest after pounding out 21 hits, its second-highest single-game total this season, in a 14-7 win over UALR Sunday in Little Rock, Ark. USA batted .312 with eight doubles, eight home runs, 30 RBI and 30 runs scored in four games last week.

The Jaguars hold a 54-29 all-time series lead over the Golden Eagles after earning a 5-3 win in a March 6 matchup in Hattiesburg, Miss. Tuesday’s contest will be the 84th meeting in the series, which dates back to 1967.

Jaguar right-hander Payton Gardner (0-2) will make his fourth start of the season, while Southern Miss right-hander Taylor Nunez (1-3) is scheduled to make his fifth start this year. Gardner tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings and tied a career high with seven strikeouts in his last start, which came last Tuesday at Mississippi State. He has struck out 30 batters in 25 2/3 innings this year.

In seven total appearances this season, Nunez has a 3.86 ERA in 21 innings pitched and has struck out 14 batters and issued 10 walks while limiting opponents to a .174 batting average.

Whitt Dorsey leads the Jaguars with a .342 batting average after hitting .571 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and five runs scored while posting a 1.671 OPS. Brad Hook hit .438 with a double, two homers, two RBI and six runs scored last week, and Dustin Dalken hit .429 with a home run, six RBI and three runs in three games last week.

Southern Mississippi (20-15, 4-5 C-USA) enters the contest having dropped consecutive games to then-No. 13 Central Florida last weekend in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles are 5-5 in road contests this year.

Mason Robbins leads USM in batting average (.357), hits (46), triples (4), total bases (66) and slugging percentage (.512), while Blake Brown holds the team lead in homers (6) and RBI (32).
