BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – No. 33 Memphis swept doubles and won four singles matches to defeat the University of South Alabama men’s tennis team 5-2 Saturday at George Ward Park.
The Jaguars drop to 15-6 in their spring campaign. The Tigers win for the sixth time in their last seven matches and improve to 16-4.
“Memphis is probably the best team we have played all year,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “Today was high-level tennis. Our guys competed well today.”
Leon Nasemann and Johnny Grimal got on the board at No. 3 with an 8-1 win over junior Cody Hall (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany). The Tigers’ duo of David Henry and Connor Glennon clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 2.
“Memphis was very explosive in doubles,” said Brochu. “We were not aggressive enough and they took over. Our objective was to match their intensity. We did and it was a great battle.”
Memphis took the first four points in singles play, winning three out of four matches in straight sets.
Leitner rallied after dropping his first set 4-6 to defeat Glennon—ranked No. 114—on the No. 3 court 4-6, 6-3, (10-8). Senior Romain Bocaert (Lille, France) outlasted Grimal at the No. 1 spot 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-5), (11-9).
“Daniel and Romain won two close matches,” said Brochu. “It was nice to see Romain win at such a high level on his last collegiate regular season match.”
South Alabama returns to action April 19 in Denton, Texas for the Sun Belt Championships.
“Today’s match was excellent preparation for our conference tournament next week,” said Brochu.
