LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR used a six-run eighth and two four-run innings to knock off University of South Alabama baseball 18-7 Friday at Gary Hogan Field.
UALR right-hander Chance Cleveland (7-2) tossed a complete game, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts and three walks to earn his seventh win of the season.
Phillip Byrd (3-2) allowed six runs on six hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks in the loss.
UALR (17-17, 4-9 SBC) pounded out 19 hits, led by Blake Johnson who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, five RBI and three runs scored. Sean Bignall finished 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, one RBI and five runs scored.
Jordan Patterson went 2-for-3 with homer, two RBI and two runs. Drew Cofield finished 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Brad Hook went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, one RBI and two runs scored. Robby Campbell added two hits, and Nick Zaharion finished with a hit and one RBI.
After Whitt Dorsey drew a one-out walk in the top of the first, Patterson hit the first pitch he saw from Cleveland just inside the right field foul pole for his seventh homer of the season to give the Jags a 2-0 lead.
UALR tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Rountree and RBI double by Johnson.
Bignall gave the Trojans a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a solo homer to center field, and Johnson doubled the lead later in the inning with a solo homer to right-center field.
Hook cut the UALR lead to 4-3 with a one-out solo blast to right center field in the top of the fourth. But UALR doubled its lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run double to left field by Johnson. Guarno pushed the Trojan lead to 8-3 later in the inning on a bases-loaded, two-run single to right field.
Johnson extended the UALR lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to right field. Burk followed with an RBI single off the right field wall to give the Trojans a 10-3 lead. The Trojans added two additional runs later in the frame on RBI singles by Parma and Guarno to take a 12-3 lead after six innings.
The Jags cut the UALR lead to 12-5 on a two-run pinch-hit home run by Cofield in the top of the eighth inning that scored Griffith, who singled earlier in the frame. Patterson followed with a walk before Hook doubled off the center field wall. Zaharion then singled up the middle to score Patterson and cut the UALR lead to 12-6. Campbell followed with an RBI single to left-center field to score Hook and cut the deficit to 12-7.
UALR added six runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run triple by Ben Crumpton, an RBI single by John Clark and two-run double by Myles Parma.
The series will continue with game two Saturday at 4 p.m. at Gary Hogan Field.
UALR doubled its lead to 14-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run triple by Crumpton, and took a 15-7 lead on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Clark and two-run double by Parma later in the frame pushed the Trojan lead to 18-7.
