JACOBS PITCHES AUBURN PAST JAG BASEBALL

Whitt Dorsey went 3-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to nine games in the Jags' 7-0 loss at Auburn Tuesday night.

AUBURN, Ala.  – Auburn right-hander Jon Luke Jacobs struck out 11 in a combined shutout with Dillon Ortman to knock off University of South Alabama baseball 7-0 Tuesday at Plainsman Park.

Jacobs (4-0) pitched into the ninth inning, and finished with 11 strikeouts, two walks and allowed three hits. He retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced in the game, and did not allow a hit in his final 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Dillon Buhrkuhl (0-3) suffered the loss in 4 1/3 innings pitched, allowing six runs – two of which were unearned – on eight hits.

Auburn (13-8) loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first, and pushed the across the game’s first run when Cullen Wacker hit into a double play that allowed Jay Gonzalez to score from third base.

The Tigers held a one-run lead through four-and-a-half innings until they plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits and two costly Jaguar errors. Caleb Bowen led off the inning with a double, and later scored on a Jaguar throwing error to double the Auburn lead to 2-0. Auburn then pushed four additional runs across on a sacrifice fly by Creede Simpson, RBI singles by Ryan Tella and Zach Alvord, an RBI triple by Wacker and RBI groundout off the bat of Justin Bryant.

Auburn pushed across the game’s final run on a sacrifice fly by Alvord in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Whitt Dorsey went 3-for-3 with a walk to lead South Alabama at the plate. Nick Zaharion added one hit and one walk.

Four Tigers recorded multiple hits, led by Wacker who finished 2-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and a run scored. Bowen and Alford had two hits, including one double each, and Tella finished with two hits, one RBI and a run scored.

Jaguar relievers James Traylor, Kyle Bartsch and Jaime Dennis combined to allow just one run on four hits with five strikeouts over the final 3 2/3 innings.

South Alabama (6-14) will return to action this weekend when it travels to Monroe, La., for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Louisiana at Monroe.
