TROY EVENS SERIES WITH 10-6 WIN OVER JAG BASEBALL

Nick Zaharion went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the Jags' 10-6 loss to Troy Saturday at Stanky Field.

MOBILE, Ala.  – Troy scored four runs in the top of the first inning and scored multiple runs in three additional innings en route to a 10-6 win over University of South Alabama baseball Saturday at Stanky Field.

The Trojans loaded the bases in the top of the first with one out on a single by Austin Golden, a Jaguar error that allowed Logan Pierce to reach and a walk to Danny Collins. Boone Shear then doubled just inside the third-base line to clear the bases and give the Trojans a 3-0 lead. One batter later, Chase Mathis reached on an infield single to score Shear and increase the Troy lead to 4-0 after one-half inning.

Troy pushed its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third on an RBI single by Shear and a Jaguar wild pitch.

South Alabama (5-13, 1-1 SBC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Troy lead in half. The Jaguars loaded the bases on a walk by Nolan Earley and consecutive singles by Drew Cofield and Jordan Patterson. Earley scored on an RBI groundout by Whitt Dorsey for the Jags’ first run of the game. Nick Zaharion followed with a two-run single down the right field line on an 0-2 pitch from Hodgskin.

Troy (9-8, 1-1 SBC) added two runs in the top of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Golden and Pierce to up its lead to 8-3.

USA cut the Trojan lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Earley and RBI groundout by Cofield. But Troy again doubled its lead in the top of the sixth on a two-out, two-run double by Mathis.

The Jags loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and pushed across their final run of the game on a walk by Zaharion.

Trojan left-hander Nate Hill (2-1) earned the win in 5 1/3 innings in relief of Jimmy Hodgskin, and allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Jarron Cito (1-2) suffered the loss in three innings pitched, allowing six runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks. Payton Gardner tossed 5 1/3 innings in relief of Cito, and allowed two unearned runs on just two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Three Jaguars recorded multiple hits in the game, led by Zaharion who went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Earley finished 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a run scored, and Dustin Dalken added two hits. Cofield and Dorsey drove in one run apiece.

Shear went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored to lead Troy at the plate. Mathis added two hits, including a double, and three RBI.

The series will conclude with the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stanky Field.
