MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team will travel to New Mexico this weekend to take on No. 53 New Mexico State on Friday and No. 59 New Mexico on Sunday.
USA will play at 2 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Sunday.
“They’re both really good teams,” said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. “We are going a little early to get used to the high altitude. It’s going to be a little tougher physically for us and it’s going to be very fast play. We’ve played four matches this season and I think we’re ready for a good test and it’s going to be this weekend.”
The Jaguars enter the weekend with a 3-1 record and a three-match win streak after picking up a 4-0 victory over Florida A&M on Sunday. A win would give the program four wins in a row for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign.
On Sunday, doubles went undefeated to easily secure the doubles point, which was later followed by senior
Romain Bocaert (Lille, France) defeating
Salif Kante on the No. 1 court to clinch the match for South Alabama. Bocaert has won his last four singles and three doubles matches and has a 10-5 overall singles record in 2011-12.
“Romain pulled out a good performance,” said Brochu. “He’s really playing good tennis. So far we’ve had four matches and he’s played awesome in all of them. Romain is playing great tennis like he did when he was a sophomore. He’s confident and I think he’s going to have a great season.”
USA leads the all-time series with NMSU 2-0, but the two teams have not met since April 5, 2005.
New Mexico State is the current holder of a 4-4 record and had a three-match win streak snapped on Wednesday to New Mexico. The Aggies have faced five ranked teams this season and has a 1-4 mark against them.
Sunday will mark the 11th meeting with the 53rd ranked Lobos, who hold a 6-4 advantage in the series. UNM has swept its last three matches, including a blanking of NMSU on Wednesday. New Mexico’s
Jadon Phillips is ranked 81st in the nation in singles and 16th in the country in doubles with partner
Phillip Anderson.
