MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team swept Florida A&M on Sunday with a 4-0 victory at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
After winning their third straight match, the Jaguars improve their overall record to 3-1, while the Rattlers fall to 3-5.
“Florida A&M is a good team,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “They’re having some good wins this year and they’re a dangerous team. I warned my guys not to take them lightly and they didn’t.”
The USA tandem of senior Romain Bocaert (Lille, France) and junior Alex Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) set the tone for the match downing Levan Clark and Salif Kante 8-4 on the No. 1 court. In the No. 2 flight senior Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) and freshman Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) clinched the doubles point with their 8-4 victory over Chidi Gabriel and Fabrice Myrtil.
Seniors Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) and Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) followed in the No. 3 spot edging Takura Happy and Temuera Asafu-Adjaye 8-7 (7-5).
“This year one of our strengths is definitely doubles,” said Brochu. “We knew we had to come out, go really hard and win the doubles point quickly to make a statement. We went up one, two and three in a really good fashion.”
Kruger picked up a quick 6-3, 6-0 win over Myrtil on the No. 5 court followed by Hall defeating Gabriel 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 flight.
Bocaert secured the match for South Alabama outlasting Kante 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 on the No. 1 court.
“Romain’s performance was big,” said Brochu. “Kante has been piling up wins this spring and won tournaments during the fall. It’s a big win for Romain, especially coming back from a break down and then winning the first set. I think everybody saw this and got really confident. Dauw gave us a point very early in the match. It’s always a boost of confidence when guys look up and we’re already up 2-0. The seniors today did a great job. It was a really good win at home.”
The Jaguars are back in action Feb. 10 at New Mexico State at 3 p.m.
